: Lipid disorders are very prevalent in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), leading to heightened cardiovascular risk. This review examines the effectiveness of lipid-lowering agents in these populations and explores gaps in the current research. The goal of this review is to assess the efficacy of lipid-lowering therapies in CKD and ESRD patients and identify future research needs.

Coronary atherosclerosis (CAD) is characterized by arterial intima lipid deposition, chronic inflammation, and fibrous tissue proliferation, leading to arterial wall thickening and lumen narrowing. As the primary cause of coronary heart disease and acute coronary syndrome, CAD significantly impacts global health. Recent genetic studies have demonstrated CAD's polygenic and multifactorial nature, providing molecular insights for early diagnosis and risk assessment.

Current Perspectives of Diabetic Dyslipidemia and Treatment Modalities.

Curr Med Chem

January 2025

Cukurova University, Faculty of Medicine, Division of Endocrinology, Adana, Turkey.

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis related to dyslipidemia. Although the terms hyperlipidemia and Diabetes Mellitus [DM] or diabetic dyslipidemia are interrelated to each other, these two conditions have some differences.

Aim: This study aimed to highlight possible mechanisms of hyperlipidemia and/or dyslipidemia in diabetic patients, which can be treated with available and newer hypolipidemic drugs.

CRISPR-Cas9 Targeting PCSK9: A Promising Therapeutic Approach for Atherosclerosis.

J Cardiovasc Transl Res

January 2025

Department of Cardiology, Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, No.1 Section 1, Xiang Lin Road, Longmatan District, Luzhou, Sichuan, 646000, China.

CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, as an innovative biomedical tool, holds significant potential in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. By precisely editing key genes such as PCSK9, CRISPR-Cas9 offers the possibility of long-term regulation of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), which may reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Early clinical studies of gene editing therapies like VERVE-101 have yielded encouraging results, highlighting both the feasibility and potential efficacy of this technology.
