Background: Meniere's disease (MD) is a disabling disease of the inner ear, having a substantial effect on a patient's quality of life. While various postulations regarding its aetiology exists, due to the difficulty with accessing inner ear tissue, there have been limited histological studies in patients with active MD.

Methods: Tissue was collected during labyrinthectomy from 8 patients with intractable MD who had failed medical therapy (22 samples), and 9 patients undergoing translabyrinthine resection of vestibular schwannoma (19 samples).

Hemangioblastomas (HBs) are highly vascularized, slow-growing, rare benign tumors (WHO grade I). They account for about 2% of intracranial neoplasms; however, they are the most common primary cerebellar tumors in adults. Another frequent seat is the spinal cord (2-10% of primary spinal cord tumors).

Objective: Against recent reports concerning cytokine or chemokine in mouse or rat inner ear cells, it is almost unknown whether human inner ear cells would produce cytokine or chemokine. We have for the first time established the human inner-ear-derived fibroblasts from endolymphatic sac.

Methods: The expression levels of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in human endolymphatic sac fibroblasts, and the effect on cytokine or chemokine production of the TLR ligands have been examined.

[Clinicopathologic study of von Hippel-Lindau syndrome-related and sporadic hemangioblastomas of central nervous system].

Objective: To study clinicopathologic features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome-related and sporadic hemangioblastomas of the central nervous system (CNS-HB).

Methods: Histopathological, ultrastructural, immunohistochemical (EnVision method) and clinical features of 21 VHL syndrome and 63 sporadic CNS-HB cases were studied with correlation of the available follow-up information.

Results: Twenty-one VHL patients accompanied with a total of 87 CNS-HBs, including one patient of developing 12 HBs within 13 years.

Background: Little information is available regarding long-term survival after pulmonary metastasectomy for gynecologic malignancies.

Methods: All patients who underwent pulmonary resection for gynecologic malignancies at our institution between January 1985 and June 2001 were reviewed. Factors affecting long-term survival were analyzed.
