Evaluation of separation performance for eggshell-based reversed-phase HPLC columns by controlling particle size and application in quantitative therapeutic drug monitoring.

Eggshell-based reversed-phase packing materials were applied to an analytical column for high-performance liquid chromatography. Commercially available eggshell powder was classified by a cyclone system to obtain three types of particles with different diameters (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation: 4.3 ± 3.8, 5.6 ± 3.3, and 9.5 ± 5.5 μm). Sedimentation separation removed tiny particles from each sample, resulting in particles with arithmetic means of 6.6 ± 5.5, 7.3 ± 4.5, and 10.2 ± 5.0 μm, respectively. The unclassified particles and three particle types treated with sedimentation separation were subsequently packed into analytical columns (150 mm × 4.6 mm I.D.), and their separation efficiencies were evaluated by comparing their height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP). The column without sedimentation separation exhibited the highest HETP, whereas the columns with sedimentation separation showed better separation efficiency and lower back pressure. The column with the best separation efficiency was applied for the separation of 10 alkylbenzenes and 5 steroids, and all peaks were observed with complete separation (peak resolution: > 1.5). Finally, the column was used for quantitative analysis of voriconazole, an azole antifungal agent, and imatinib, a first-generation molecularly targeted drug for cancer treatment, in spiked whole blood. Excellent accuracy (99.1-102.8%) and precision (0.6-1.9%) were observed for the spiked drugs and long-term stability (>3000 column volumes of mobile phase flow) indicated good applicability of the developed eggshell-based column as an analytical column for routine analyses of therapeutic drugs in blood.

We study the kinetics of vapor-liquid and vapor-solid phase separation of a hydrodynamics preserving three-dimensional one-component Lennard Jones system in the presence of an external gravitational field using extensive molecular dynamic simulation. A bicontinuous domain structure is formed when the homogeneous system near the critical density is quenched inside the coexistence region. In the absence of gravity, the domain morphology is statistically self-similar and the length scale grows as per the existing laws.

In response to the growing need to expand the knowledge base on novel, more sustainable protein sources, this study investigated the effectiveness of cowpea protein concentrate (CPC) as a natural emulsifying agent, examining the relationships between pH (3-11), oil concentration (2-10 %), and emulsion stability. pH and oil concentration significantly impacted droplet size distribution, with uniformity decreasing in the order of pH 9 > pH 11 > pH 7, which was attributed to droplet coalescence and flocculation. As evidenced by circular dichroism, alkalinity induced a slight increase in the beta-sheet content of CPC, while simultaneously reducing the alpha-helix content.

Co-Flocculation of Mixed-Sized Colloidal Particles in Aqueous Dispersions Under a DC Electric Field.

When an electric field is applied to or removed from colloidal particle aqueous dispersions, a reversible increase in sedimentation velocity of the colloidal particles, referred to as the Electrically Induced Rapid Separation (ERS) effect, is observed. While electrophoresis and other interfacial electrokinetic phenomena under applied electric fields are well-studied, the phenomena of particle aggregation and re-dispersion caused by the application and removal of the field remain largely unexplored despite their significance. Experiments using mixed aqueous dispersions of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles of different sizes revealed that applying an electric field induced the formation of co-flocs involving both large and small particles, significantly enhancing the sedimentation velocity.

Moderate preoxidation is feasible for odor-producing algae treatments, usually requiring trade-offs in algal removal and integrity maintenance. However, dosing oxidants may cause internal oxidative homeostasis imbalances and secondary odorous metabolite responses, adding new trade-offs for moderate treatments. Peracetic acid (PAA)/Fe processes are promising strategies in moderate treatments and thus were applied to examine how to achieve the following three trade-offs: good algal removal, no odorant increases and no releases.
