Wheat coleoptile is a sheath-like structure that helps to deliver the first leaf from embryo to the soil surface. Here, a RIL population consisting of 245 lines derived from Zhou 8425B × Chinese Spring cross was genotyped by the high-density Illumina iSelect 90K assay for coleoptile length (CL) QTL mapping. Three QTL for CL were mapped on chromosomes 2BL, 4BS and 4DS. Of them, two major QTL and were detected, which could explain 9.1%-22.2% of the phenotypic variances across environments on and loci, respectively. Several studies have reported that may reduce the length of wheat CL but no study has been carried out at molecular level. In order to verify that the gene is the functional gene for the 4B QTL, an overexpression line -OE and a CRISPR/SpCas9 line -KO were studied. The results showed that overexpression could reduce the CL, while loss-of-function of would increase the CL relative to that of the null transgenic plants (TNL). To dissect the underlying regulatory mechanism of on CL, comparative RNA-Seq was conducted between -OE and TNL. Transcriptome profiles revealed a few key pathways involving the function of in coleoptile development, including phytohormones, circadian rhythm and starch and sucrose metabolism. Our findings may facilitate wheat breeding for longer coleoptiles to improve seedling early vigor for better penetration through the soil crust in arid regions.

Phytotoxicity Study of (Amino)imidazo[1,2-]pyridine Derivatives Toward the Control of , , and Weeds.

J Agric Food Chem

December 2024

Instituto de Química, Laboratório de Química Metodológica e Orgânica Sintética (LaQMOS), Universidade de Brasília, 70904-970 Brasília, DF, Brazil.

In this work, several imidazo[1,2-]pyridines were synthesized through the Groebke-Blackburn-Bienaymé three-component reaction (GBB-3CR), and their phytotoxicity was evaluated by the influence on the growth of wheat coleoptiles and three important agricultural seeds (, , and ) at test concentrations of 1000, 300, 100, 30, and 10 μM. A structure-activity relationship was established, showing the importance of halogen groups at the position of the attached aromatic ring and the presence of a cyclohexylamine group for greater activity. Post-modification of some GBB-3CR adducts was carried out, leading to imidazo[1,2-]pyridine-tetrazole hybrids, which were also evaluated in these bioassays.

The placenta plays a pivotal role in fetal development and the dam's subsequent lactation performance, because it facilitates nutrient transfer, heat dissipation, and gas exchange with the growing fetus, and regulates key hormones essential for mammary gland development. Heat stress experienced during gestation and lactation can significantly reduce the placenta's capacity to perform these critical functions. To investigate the impact of heat stress, trials were conducted over the summer months of 2020, 2022, and 2023 in Florida.

Centro de Investigación en Biotecnología, Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.

Background: Linton & Epling subsp. (Lamiaceae) is an aromatic medicinal plant, characterized by a high concentration of tilianin, a flavonoid with therapeutic potential in cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we have explored the use of colchicine to obtain autotetraploid lines of and analyze their morphological characteristics.

Article Synopsis
  • Aneuploidy in plants leads to significant differences in how they look, grow, and function due to imbalances in their chromosome numbers.
  • A study on a cross between Populus species found a variety of traits in 393 offspring, including different numbers of cotyledons and a wide range of chromosome counts, affecting their growth.
  • The findings offer valuable genetic resources that can help illuminate chromosomal roles and enhance breeding strategies for Populus by leveraging variations in chromosome levels.
