Instances of repeated evolution of novel phenotypes can shed light on the conserved molecular mechanisms underlying morphological diversity. A rare example of an exaggerated soft tissue phenotype is the formation of a snout flap in fishes. This tissue flap develops from the upper lip and has evolved in one cichlid genus from Lake Malawi and one genus from Lake Tanganyika. To investigate the molecular basis of snout flap convergence, we used mRNA sequencing to compare two species with snout flap to their close relatives without snout flaps from each lake. Our analysis identified 201 genes that were repeatedly differentially expressed between species with and without snout flap in both lakes, suggesting shared pathways, even though the flaps serve different functions. Shared expressed genes are involved in proline and hydroxyproline metabolism, which have been linked to human skin and facial deformities. Additionally, we found enrichment for transcription factor binding sites at upstream regulatory sequences of differentially expressed genes. Among the enriched transcription factors were members of the FOX transcription factor family, especially foxf1 and foxa2, which showed an increased expression in the flapped snout. Both of these factors are linked to nose morphogenesis in mammals. We also found ap4 (tfap4), a transcription factor showing reduced expression in the flapped snout with an unknown role in craniofacial soft tissue development. As genes involved in cichlid snout flap development are associated with human midline facial dysmorphologies, our findings hint at the conservation of genes involved in midline patterning across distant evolutionary lineages of vertebrates, although further functional studies are required to confirm this.

A new long-snouted Corydoras species is described from two tributaries of the río Manuripe and a tributary of the río Madre de Dios, rio Madeira basin, Peru. Corydoras fulleri can be distinguished from its congeners by having the following features: (a) branch of the temporal sensory canal at sphenotic, which gives rise to the supraorbital canal, with two pores; (b) upper tooth plate of branchial arch with three series of teeth; (c) area at the corner of the mouth, ventral to the maxillary barbel, with a small fleshy flap; (d) two moderate-sized dark-brown or black blotches on caudal-fin base, one on its lateral portion and another one on its dorsal portion, blotches variably diffuse and/or fused with each other; (e) absence of a dark-brown or black stripe transversally crossing the orbit; (f) a longitudinal dark-brown or black stripe on the postdorsal region of flank midline, variably fused with the lateral peduncular blotch, some specimens with slender, longitudinally elongated, dark-brown or black blotch on flank midline, forming a dash-like marking, stripe or dash-like blotch diffuse in some specimens; and (g) region around dorsal-fin origin generally lacking dark brown or black blotch, or displaying diffuse blotch.

We describe a new species of Phrynobatrachus from the eastern part of the Upper Guinea forest region, Ghana, West Africa. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from all of its congeners by the combination of a slender body, short and pointed snout, a relatively warty dorsum, a black-spotted throat in both sexes, a gular flap in males, a dark spotted chest, a white-greyish venter with occasional blackish spots, rudimentary pedal webbing, none to slightly dilated finger tips and strongly delated toe tips, presence of both inner and outer metatarsal tubercles and absence of a dark face mask, eyelid tubercles and longer dorsal ridges. We collected mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data from the 16S rRNA gene to measure the genetic diversity of the new species, and to estimate phylogenetic relationships.
