Introduction: The competency-based medical education (CBME) movement continues to gain momentum in postgraduate physician training, resulting in increasing interest among surgical training programmes on how to implement it effectively. Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) were introduced to connect competencies (characteristics/abilities of learners) and the professional activities to be entrusted to them on qualification/graduation. Although reviews related to the field of general surgery have been published on specific aspects of CBME, for example, workplace-based assessment, there is a paucity of published guidance available for surgeon-educators to plan and implement CBME using an EPA framework. This scoping review aims to provide an overview of the current use of EPAs in general surgery.
Methods And Analysis: This scoping review will be based on the original five-stage approach described by Arksey and O'Malley with the addition of protocol-specific items from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols extension for scoping reviews. The primary research question focuses on describing how EPAs have been used in general surgery and where potential gaps remain that warrant further study. The review will include peer-reviewed journal publications and an extensive review of grey literature sources. The following databases will be searched for published literature from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2022: PubMed; CINAHL, Africa-Wide Information, PsycInfo and ERIC (via EBSCOhost); Scopus; and SciELO (via Web of Science). Studies that describe the use of EPAs for curriculum design, teaching and/or assessment of competence in postgraduate general surgery training will be eligible for inclusion.
Ethics And Dissemination: The institutional ethics board of the University of Cape Town has granted a waiver of formal approval requirement. The dissemination strategy includes publication of results in peer-reviewed journals, presentation at international conferences and presentation to relevant stakeholders as deemed appropriate.

Background: The decrease in S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR) leads to an elevation of S-nitrosylation, thereby exacerbating the progression of cardiomyopathy in response to hemodynamic stress. However, the mechanisms under GSNOR decrease remain unclear. Here, we identify NEDD4 (neuronal precursor cell expressed developmentally downregulated 4) as a novel molecule that plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy, by modulating GSNOR levels, thereby demonstrating significant therapeutic potential.

Background: The impact of surgical specialization on long-term survival in patients undergoing emergent colon cancer resections remains unclear.
Method: A retrospective analysis was conducted on all patients who underwent emergent colon cancer resections at a secondary care hospital between 2010 and 2020. The most senior surgeon performing the procedures was classified as colorectal surgeon (CS) or non-colorectal surgeon (NCS).

Background And Aims: Narrative competence is essential for good communication between medical staff and patients. It is a powerful instrument for the delivery of holistic healthcare. However, little research focuses on the influencing factors of narrative competence and the relationships among resilience, self-efficacy, and narrative competence.

Background: This study aimed to validate the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) risk calculator for predicting outcomes in patients undergoing abdominoplasty after massive weight loss.
Methods: Patients' characteristics, pre-existing comorbidities and adverse outcomes in our department from 2013 to 2023 were collected retrospectively. Adverse events were defined according to ACS-NSQIP standards and predicted risks were calculated manually using the ACS-NSQIP risk calculator.

Aim: Vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) accelerates growth factor secretion, lymphatic endothelial cell migration toward the interstitial flow and lymphagiogenesis in a multidirectional pattern. Our observational study aimed to examine the hypothesis that nanofibrillar collagen scaffolds (NCS) combined with VLNT can provide guided lymphagiogenesis creating long-lasting lymphatic pathways.
Methods: Twenty-four patients (21 female, 3 male) underwent a lymphatic microsurgery for upper ( = 11) or lower ( = 13) limb secondary lymphedema and completed at least 18 months follow-up were selected and equally divided in 2 groups; Group-A underwent VLNT, Group-B underwent combined VLNT and NCS procedure.
