High Resolution-Magic Angle Spinning (HR-MAS) solid-state NMR spectroscopy is finding increasing application in the analysis of solid foods, bypassing the need for complicated solvent extraction procedures. In the present protocol, we report a simple analytical approach based on HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy for the phenolic profiling of olive fruits, flesh, or skin. This approach allows the facile characterization of phenolic compounds in olive fruits cultivated for extra-virgin olive oil production as a function of maturation and variety, in addition to processing technology for table olives.

Metabolomics data analysis includes, next to the preprocessing, several additional repetitive tasks that can however be heavily dataset dependent or experiment setup specific due to the vast heterogeneity in instrumentation, protocols, or also compounds/samples that are being measured. To address this, various toolboxes and software packages in Python or R have been and are being developed providing researchers and analysts with bioinformatic/chemoinformatic tools to create their own workflows tailored toward their specific needs. This chapter presents tools and example workflows for common tasks focusing on the functionality provided by R packages developed as part of the RforMassSpectrometry initiative.

Introduction: Many interventional strategies are commonly used to treat chronic low back pain (CLBP), though few are specifically intended to target the distinct underlying pathomechanisms causing low back pain. Restorative neurostimulation has been suggested as a specific treatment for mechanical CLBP resulting from multifidus dysfunction. In this randomized controlled trial, we report outcomes from a cohort of patients with CLBP associated with multifidus dysfunction treated with restorative neurostimulation compared to those randomized to a control group receiving optimal medical management (OMM) over 1 year.

Ammonia is a product of amino acid metabolism that accumulates in the blood of patients with liver cirrhosis, leading to neurotoxic effects and hepatic encephalopathy (HE). HE manifestations can range from mild, subclinical disturbances in cognition, or minimal HE (mHE) to gross disorientation and coma, a condition referred to as overt HE. Many blood-based biomarkers reflecting these neurotoxic effects of ammonia and liver disease can be measured in the blood allowing the development of new biomarkers to diagnose cirrhosis patients at risk of developing HE.

Background: Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is a common head and neck malignant tumor, which is difficult to treat at the advanced NPC due to its occult and high metastatic potential to the cervical lymph nodes and distant organs. Low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) is increasingly being investigated for potential cancer treatment. When combined with immune checkpoint inhibitors, LDRT has been shown to significantly improve the immune microenvironment of tumors, thereby promote the immune attack on tumor cells.
