Quantum dots (QDs) have become promising electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitters with high quantum yield and size-tunable luminescence. However, most QDs generate strong ECL emission at the cathode, developing anodic ECL-emitting QDs with excellent performance is challenging. In this work, low-toxic quaternary AgInZnS QDs synthesized by a one-step aqueous phase method were used as novel anodic ECL emitters. AgInZnS QDs exhibited strong and stable ECL emission and a low excitation potential, which could avoid the side reaction of oxygen evolution. Furthermore, AgInZnS QDs displayed high ECL efficiency (Φ) of 5.84, taking the Φ of Ru(bpy)/tripropylamine (TPrA) ECL system as 1. Compared to AgInS QDs without Zn doping and traditional anode luminescent CdTe QDs, the ECL intensity of AgInZnS QDs was 1.62 times and 3.64 times higher than that of AgInS QDs and CdTe QDs, respectively. As a proof-of-concept, we further designed an "on-off-on" ECL biosensor for detecting microRNA-141 based on a dual isothermal enzyme-free strand displacement reaction (SDR), which not only to achieve the cyclic amplification of the target and ECL signal, but also to construct a switch of the biosensor. The ECL biosensor had a wide linear range from 100 aM to 10 nM with a low detection limit of 33.3 aM. Together, the constructed ECL sensing platform is a promising tool for rapid and accurate diagnosis of clinical diseases.

Strong tolerance to off-stoichiometry of group I-III-VI semiconductors in their nanocrystal form allows fabrication of multinary, alloyed structures of desired properties. In particular, alloyed Cu-In-Zn-S and Ag-In-Zn-S quantum dots (QDs) have recently emerged as efficient fluorophors, in which tailoring the composition allows tuning the optical properties, and achieving photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields approaching unity. However, poor understanding of the carrier recombination mechanism in these materials limits their further development.

An approach for synthesizing AgInZnS/CdS/ZnS core-shell-shell quantum dots (QDs) that demonstrate exceptional stability and electroluminescence (EL) performance is introduced. This approach involves incorporating a cadmium sulfide (CdS) interlayer between an AgInZnS (AIZS) core and a zinc sulfide (ZnS) shell to prevent the diffusion of Zn ions into the AIZS core and the cation exchange at the core-shell interface. Consequently, a uniform and thick ZnS shell, with a thickness of 2.

Photoassisted electrocatalysis (P-EC) emerges as a rising star for hydrogen production by embedding photoactive species in electrocatalysts, for which the interfacial structure design and charge transfer kinetics of the multifunctional catalysts remain a great challenge. Herein, Zn-AgInS quantum dots (ZAIS QDs) were embedded into 2D NiFe layered double hydroxide nanosheets through a simple hydrothermal treatment to form 0D/2D composite catalysts for P-EC. With evidence from transient photovoltage spectroscopy, we acquired a clear and fundamental understanding on the kinetics of charge extraction time and extraction amount in the 0D/2D heterojunctions that was proved to play a key role in P-EC.

A sensitive fluorescence strategy was constructed for the detection of α-glucosidase activity based on AgInZnS QDs. The AIZS QDs which were synthesized by hydrothermal method have a fluorescence emission wavelength of 554 nm. Ce was able to oxidize p-phenylenediamine (PPD) to generate oxPPD, which can quench the fluorescence of AIZS QDs through dynamic quenching.
