Antigen-induced memory T cells undergo counterintuitive activation in an antigen-independent manner, which is called bystander response. Although it is well documented that memory CD8 T cells produce IFNγ and upregulate the cytotoxic program upon the stimulation with inflammatory cytokines, there is only rare evidence that this provides an actual protection against pathogens in immunocompetent individuals. One of the reasons might be numerous antigen-inexperienced memory-like T cells that are also capable of the bystander response. Little is known about the bystander protection of memory and memory-like T cells and their redundancies with innate-like lymphocytes in humans because of the interspecies differences and the lack of controlled experiments. However, it has been proposed that IL-15/NKG2D-driven bystander activation of memory T cells drives protection or immunopathology in particular human diseases.

Cachexia is a complex metabolic disorder characterized by negative energy balance due to increased consumption and lowered intake, leading to progressive tissue wasting and inefficient energy distribution. Once considered as passive bystander, metabolism is now acknowledged as a regulator of biological functions and disease progression. This shift in perspective mirrors the evolving understanding of cachexia itself, no longer viewed merely as a secondary consequence of cancer but as an active process.

Purpose: To summarize and categorize postulated mechanisms of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-mediated retinal and choroidal inflammation and discuss resulting implications for evaluation and management of these adverse reactions.
Design: Targeted literature review with interpretation and perspective Methods: We performed a review of selected literature describing immune-mediated retinal and choroidal adverse reactions associated with ICI therapy, synthesizing and categorizing the likely underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Based on these mechanistic categories, we provide perspective on a rational approach to the evaluation of patients with ICI-associated inflammatory disorders of the retina and choroid.

Unlabelled: Respiratory epithelial cells can survive direct infection by influenza viruses, and the long-term consequences of that infection have been characterized in a subset of proximal airway cell types. The impact on the cells that survive viral infection in the distal lung epithelia, however, is much less well-characterized. Utilizing a Cre-expressing influenza B virus (IBV) and a lox-stop-lox tdTomato reporter mouse model, we identified that alveolar type 2 (AT2) pneumocytes, a progenitor cell type in the distal lung, can survive viral infection.

Induction of cell fates by growth factors impacts many facets of developmental biology and disease. LIN-3/EGF induces the equipotent vulval precursor cells (VPCs) in to assume the 3˚-3˚-2˚-1˚-2˚-3˚ pattern of cell fates. 1˚ and 2˚ cells become specialized epithelia and undergo stereotyped series of cell divisions to form the vulva.

Microaggressions undermine health professionals' performance in patient care, research, and education. This study aimed to develop and evaluate an intervention addressing microaggressions in healthcare settings by empowering bystanders to act as upstanders across an academic medical center (AMC). This was achieved through an educational intervention that included a novel framework, didactics, video demonstrations, and practice with realistic scenarios.
