Published: May 2023

In 1923, the published G. I. Taylor's seminal paper on the stability of what we now call Taylor-Couette flow. In the century since the paper was published, Taylor's ground-breaking linear stability analysis of fluid flow between two rotating cylinders has had an enormous impact on the field of fluid mechanics. The paper's influence has extended to general rotating flows, geophysical flows and astrophysical flows, not to mention its significance in firmly establishing several foundational concepts in fluid mechanics that are now broadly accepted. This two-part issue includes review articles and research articles spanning a broad range of contemporary research areas, all rooted in Taylor's landmark paper. This article is part of the theme issue 'Taylor-Couette and related flows on the centennial of Taylor's seminal paper (Part 2)'.

In many insect species, the ability of males to inhibit their mates from remating is an important component of fitness. This ability is also essential for the effective management of insect pests, including tephritid fruit flies, using the Sterile Insect Technique. Here we apply transcriptomics and proteomics to male reproductive tissues before and after mating to characterize components of semen that might mediate remating inhibition in Queensland fruit fly.

Objective: Our goal was to compare the original conceptualization of the alexithymia construct with the attention-appraisal model, focusing primarily on the removal of the reduced imaginal activity component, a seminal aspect of the construct in the original model. We also examined associations between alexithymia and emotional distress and emotion regulation, attachment, and trauma, and whether alexithymia is a transdiagnostic risk factor. We discuss differences between the models in the treatment of alexithymia and also differences in measurement.

Encephalitis lethargica, an epidemic neurological illness, typically involved a severe sleep disorder and progressive parkinsonism. A century later, our understanding relies on seminal descriptions, more recent historical research and the study of small numbers of possible sporadic cases. Theories around infection, environmental toxins, catatonia and autoimmune encephalitis have been proposed.
