Piezoelectric nerve guidance channels made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) were evaluated in a transected mouse sciatic nerve model. Poled PVDF channels were compared to unpoled PVDF channels after 4 and 12 weeks of implantation. In all animals, the proximal and distal nerve stumps were bridged by a continuous nerve cable. Nerves regenerated in poled channels contained a higher number of myelinated axons than those regenerated in unpoled channels at both time periods. We conclude that piezoelectric nerve guidance channels enhance peripheral nerve regeneration and provide a tool to investigate the influence of electrical activity on nerve regeneration.

The abnormal expression of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is linked to the development of various diseases. Accurate determination of AChE activity as well as screening AChE inhibitors (AChEIs) holds paramount importance for early diagnosis and treatment of AChE-related diseases. Herein, a fluorescent and colorimetric dual-channel probe based on gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO NSs) was developed.

This study focuses on improving the performance of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for robotic control systems. The challenge lies in effectively reducing the impact of artifacts on raw data to enhance the performance both in quality and reliability. The proposed MVMD-MSI algorithm combines the advantages of multivariate variational mode decomposition (MVMD) and multivariate synchronization index (MSI).

Thirty-four per cent of deaths among Americans aged 1-46 are due to injury, and many of these deaths could be prevented if all hospitals performed as well as the highest-performing hospitals. The Institute of Medicine and the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine have called for learning health systems, with emphasis on clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) as a means of limiting preventable deaths. Reduction in mortality has been demonstrated when evidence-based trauma CPGs are adhered to; however, guidelines are variably updated, redundant, absent, inaccessible, or perceived as irrelevant.

Neurons migrate in a saltatory manner by repeating two distinct steps: extension of the leading process and translocation of the cell body. The former step is critical for determining the migratory route in response to extracellular guidance cues. In the latter step, neurons must generate robust forces that translocate the bulky soma against mechanical barriers of the surrounding three-dimensional environment.

Poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm)-based smart hydrogels are widely employed in emerging applications such as drug delivery and tissue engineering, because their lower critical solution temperature (LCST) is close to physiological conditions. However, the dense chain collapse during the thermo-responsive phase transition restricts water diffusion, resulting in limited volumetric change. Here, a pure PNIPAm hydrogel that achieves a large-scale volume transition by incorporating PNIPAm microgels, is presented.
