Protein S-palmitoylation is a reversible form of protein lipidation in which the formation of a thioester bond occurs between a cysteine (Cys) residue of a protein and a 16-carbon fatty acid chain. This modification is catalyzed by a family of palmitoyl acyl transferases, the DHHC enzymes, so called because of their Asp-His-His-Cys (DHHC) catalytic motif. Deregulation of DHHC enzymes has been linked to various diseases, including cancer and infections.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting memory, language, and thinking with no curative treatment. Symptoms appear gradually, and pathological brain changes may occur twenty years before the physical and psychological signs, pointing to the urgent development of preventive interventions. Physical activity has been investigated as a preventive tool to defeat the main biological features of AD: pathological amyloid protein plaques, tau tangles, myelin degeneration, and iron deposits in the brain.

Background & Aims: Dilated intercellular space (DIS) in esophageal epithelium, a sign of impaired barrier function, is a characteristic finding of GERD that also is found in obese patients without GERD. We have explored molecular mechanisms whereby adipose tissue products might impair esophageal barrier integrity.
Methods: We established cultures of visceral fat obtained during foregut surgery from obese and non-obese patients.

pH and peroxynitrite (ONOO) are two critical biomarkers to unveil the corresponding status of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, which are closely related to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Simultaneously monitoring pH and ONOO fluctuations in the ER and mitochondria during AD progression is pivotal for clarifying the interplay between the disorders of the two organelles and revealing AD pathogenesis. Herein, we designed and synthesized a dual-channel fluorescent probe (DCFP) to visualize pH and ONOO in the ER and mitochondria.
