South Dakota's Newborn Screening (NBS) program has been in existence for nearly 50 years. What began as a screen for a single condition has now expanded to more than 50 conditions. From 2005-2019 alone, 315 infants were confirmed as positive for a condition detected by the newborn screen in South Dakota. This article summarizes the process of newborn screening in South Dakota, the role of the primary care physician when caring for an infant with a positive screen, the groups of conditions which are included on the South Dakota NBS panel, how NBS changed over time, and the process for adding conditions to the South Dakota NBS panel.

A global dataset of freshwater fish trophic interactions.

Sci Data

January 2025

University of South Dakota, Department of Biology, Vermillion, SD, 57069, USA.

Freshwater management and research frequently rely on trophic data to manage freshwater fishes, yet it is difficult to perform a simple search of dietary information for any one species. FishBase represents the largest effort to organize freshwater dietary data into a singular, navigable dataset. Nonetheless, FishBase excludes a large portion of the ecological literature because it was developed before the creation of most modern scientific search engines.

Stimulant-involved overdose deaths: Constructing dynamic hypotheses.

Int J Drug Policy

January 2025

MGH Institute for Technology Assessment, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, 02144, USA. Electronic address:

The overdose epidemic in the United States is evolving, with a rise in stimulant (cocaine and/or methamphetamine)-only and opioid and stimulant-involved overdose deaths for reasons that remain unclear. We conducted interviews and group model building workshops in Massachusetts and South Dakota. Building on these data and extant research, we identified six dynamic hypotheses, explaining changes in stimulant-involved overdose trends, visualized using causal loop diagrams.

Crop rotation effects on the population density of soybean soilborne pathogens under no-till cropping system.

Plant Dis

January 2025

USDA-ARS North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory, Brookings, South Dakota, United States;

Soilborne diseases are persistent problems in soybean production. Long-term crop rotation can contribute to soilborne disease management. However, the response of soilborne pathogens to crop rotation is inconsistent, and rotation efficacy is highly variable.

With increasing advancements and efforts towards space exploration, there is a pressing need to understand the impacts of spaceflight on astronauts' health. Astronauts have reported signs and symptoms of dry eye disease upon traveling to the International Space Station (ISS), thus necessitating an evaluation of the factors that contribute to the onset of spaceflight associated dry eye disease. Prior literature describes the hypercapnic environment of the ISS; however, the link between the high CO levels and astronauts' symptoms of dry eye disease remains unexplored.

Nitrogen inputs for sustainable crop production for a growing population require the enhancement of biological nitrogen fixation. Efforts to increase biological nitrogen fixation include bioprospecting for more effective nitrogen-fixing bacteria. As bacterial nitrogenases are extremely sensitive to oxygen, most primary isolation methods rely on the use of semisolid agar or broth to limit oxygen exposure.
