Eleven bovine, 19 porcine, and 3 ovine picornaviruses were tested for their ability to grow in the presence of the viral inhibitors 2-(alpha-hydroxy-benzyl)- benzimidazole (HBB) and guanidine-HC1 (GHC1). The nature of the lesions produced by inoculation of newborn mice with these viruses was also investigated. Nine bovine viruses were inhibited by both compounds, and produced skeletal myonecrosis in mice, suggesting similarities to the human coxsackie group B viruses and indicating potential pathogenicity for bovine species. One bovine virus (VH7) was inhibited by GHC1 but not by HBB and caused widespread skeletal muscle damage in mice typical of coxsackie group A viruses. Another bovine virus (F266a) was inhibited only by HBB. None of the porcine or ovine viruses showed significant inhibition by either compound nor produced lesions in mice.

The first marine pestivirus, Phocoena pestivirus (PhoPeV), isolated from harbor porpoise, has been recently described. To further characterize this unique pestivirus, its host cell tropism and growth kinetics were determined in different cell lines. In addition, the interaction of PhoPeV with innate immunity in porcine epithelial cells and the role of selected cellular factors involved in the viral entry and RNA replication of PhoPeV were investigated in comparison to closely and distantly related pestiviruses.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected tropical parasitic disease linked with significant social and economic burdens worldwide. The scientific community has minimal information on echinococcosis in Romanian people, and hospital medical records are the only sources that may be used to investigate its status. A 7-year retrospective clinical study on pediatric patients with CE from Southeast Romania was performed, and 39 children and adolescents were included, aged 2-15 years old.

The major hurdle of xenotransplantation is the immune response triggered by human natural antibodies interacting with carbohydrate antigens on the transplanted animal organ. Specifically, terminal glycoprotein motifs such as galactose-α1,3-galactose (α-Gal) and N-glycolylneuraminic acid (Neu5Gc) are significant obstacles. Little is known about the abundance and compositions of asparagine-linked complex carbohydrates (N-glycans) carrying these motifs in mammalian organs.

Quantitative trait loci (QTL) are genomic regions that influence essential traits in livestock. Understanding QTL distribution and density across species' genomes is crucial for animal genetics research. This study explored the QTLome of cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens by analyzing QTL distribution and evaluating the correlation between QTL, gene density, and chromosome size with the aim to identify QTL-enriched genomic regions.

Nonadditive genetic effects pose significant challenges to traditional genomic selection methods for quantitative traits. Machine learning approaches, particularly kernel-based methods, offer promising solutions to overcome these limitations. In this study, we developed a novel machine learning method, KPRR, which integrated a polynomial kernel into ridge regression to effectively capture nonadditive genetic effects.
