Data Sources: The electronic databases Cochrane Oral Health's Trials Register, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE Ovid, Embase Ovid, CINAHL EBSCO, LILACS BIREME Virtual Health Library from inception to September 2021, along with trial registers and journals (hand searching) were searched to identify the randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Study Selection: Two reviewers independently identified and selected RCTs of at least three months' duration, comparing the effectiveness of subgingival instrumentation relative to no active intervention or usual care (oral hygiene instruction, education, or supportive interventions, and/or supragingival scaling) in the reduction of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in periodontitis patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus.

Data Extraction And Synthesis: Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were performed by two reviewers independently. Data were synthesized quantitatively with meta-analyses using a random-effects model, and pooled outcomes were expressed as mean differences with 95% confidence intervals. In addition, subgroup analysis, heterogeneity assessment, sensitivity analyses, summary of findings, and assessment of the certainty of the evidence were performed.

Results: Out of 3109 identified records, 35 RCTs were included for qualitative synthesis, and amongst them, 33 studies were included for meta-analysis. Meta-analyses showed that periodontal treatment with subgingival instrumentation, compared to usual care or no treatment, led to a mean absolute reduction of 0.43% in HbA1c at 3 to 4 months, 0.30% at six months, and 0.50% at 12 months. The certainty of the evidence was assessed to be moderate.

Conclusions: The authors concluded that periodontitis treatment by subgingival instrumentation improves glycaemic control in diabetic patients. However, there is insufficient evidence about the effect of periodontal treatment on quality of life or diabetic complications.

Background: Regenerative endodontics' primary objective is to establish a favorable environment in the root canal by removing infection, providing a sturdy scaffold, and sealing the apical end of the tooth tightly. These actions should promote pulp regeneration and root development.

Aim: This study evaluated histologically the regenerative potential of injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel or collagen with blood clot as scaffolds during revascularization of immature necrotic dog's teeth.

Role of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy for the management of peri-implant diseases among habitual nicotinic product users: A systematic review.

Photodiagnosis Photodyn Ther

December 2024

Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry, College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Objective: The objective was to systematically review original studies that assessed the influence of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for managing peri-implant diseases among habitual nicotinic product (NP) users.

Methods: The research question was "Is aPDT effective for managing peri-implant diseases among NP users?" Indexed databases (PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, and ISI Web of Knowledge) and Google Scholar were searched up to and including December 2024 without time and language barriers. Using Boolean operators, the following keywords were searched in different combinations: antimicrobial photodynamic therapy; crestal bone loss; peri-implant diseases; probing depth; nicotine; and smoking.

Application of Nanomaterials Targeting Immune Cells in the Treatment of Chronic Inflammation.

Int J Nanomedicine

December 2024

Department of Oral Implantology, Hospital of Stomatology, Jilin University, Changchun, 130021, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic inflammation is linked to various diseases and is characterized by prolonged immune cell activation, resulting in tissue damage.
  • Despite the effectiveness of current anti-inflammatory medications, they often have side effects due to non-specific targeting.
  • Nanoparticle drug delivery shows promise for targeted therapy in inflammation, but improvements are needed to specifically target different immune cell types for enhanced therapeutic effects.

Background and aim Any alterations in the hormonal regulation system such as thyroid dysfunction may have an impact on oral health status, which in turn may affect their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The objective of this study was to determine the association of thyroid dysfunction on oral health status and OHRQoL of subjects with thyroid dysfunction. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 subjects with thyroid dysfunction and 150 subjects without thyroid dysfunction aged 18-60 years from a government hospital in Bangalore city.

Objective: The aim was to compare the efficacy of local minocycline hydrochloride delivery (LMHD) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as adjuncts to mechanical debridement (MD) for the treatment of peri-implant mucositis (PM).

Methods: Patients with PM were included. The following information was retrieved from patients' digital dental records: (a) age, (b) gender, (c) duration of implants in function, (d) number of implants, (e) depth of implant placement, and (f) mode of prosthesis retention.
