AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Background: The frontal aslant tract (FAT) is a bilateral tract located within each frontal lobe. It connects the supplementary motor area in the superior frontal gyrus with the pars opercularis in the inferior frontal gyrus. There is a new and broader conceptualization of this tract called the extended FAT (eFAT). The eFAT tract role is believed to be related to several brain functions, including verbal fluency as one of its main domains.

Methods: Tractographies were performed by using DSI Studio software on a template of 1065 healthy human brains. The tract was observed in a three-dimensional plane. The Laterality Index was calculated based on the length, volume, and diameter of fibers. A t test was performed to verify the statistical significance of global asymmetry. The results were compared with cadaveric dissections performed according to the Klingler technique. An illustrative case enlightens the neurosurgical application of this anatomic knowledge.

Results: The eFAT communicates the superior frontal gyrus with the Broca area (within the left hemisphere) or its contralateral homotopic area within the nondominant hemisphere. We measured the commisural fibers, traced cingulate, striatal, and insular connections and showed the existence of new frontal projections as part of the main structure. The tract did not show a significant asymmetry between the hemispheres.

Conclusions: The tract was successfully reconstructed, focusing on its morphology and anatomic characteristics.

Aims: Cognitive functions are reduced in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients after deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The current study attempted to elucidate whether DBS alters the functional connectivity (FC) pattern of cognitive networks in PD patients.

Background: Dance has emerged as a complementary treatment that may promote adaptive neural plasticity while improving symptoms of Parkinson disease (PD), such as balance, gait, posture, and walking. Understanding brain changes that arise from participation in dance interventions is important as these neural plastic changes play an important role in protecting and healing the brain. Although dance has been shown to improve PD motor and nonmotor symptoms, the neural mechanisms underlying these changes, specifically depression and mood, remain elusive.

Resting-State Network Plasticity Following Category Learning Depends on Sensory Modality.

Hum Brain Mapp

December 2024

Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, Department of Biopsychology, Faculty of Psychology, Ruhr University Bochum, Bochum, Germany.

Learning new categories is fundamental to cognition, occurring in daily life through various sensory modalities. However, it is not well known how acquiring new categories can modulate the brain networks. Resting-state functional connectivity is an effective method for detecting short-term brain alterations induced by various modality-based learning experiences.

Atlas-scale single-cell DNA methylation profiling with sciMETv3.

Single-cell methods to assess DNA methylation have not achieved the same level of cell throughput per experiment compared to other modalities, with large-scale datasets requiring extensive automation, time, and other resources. Here, we describe sciMETv3, a combinatorial indexing-based technique that enables atlas-scale libraries to be produced in a single experiment. To reduce the sequencing burden, we demonstrate the compatibility of sciMETv3 with capture techniques to enrich regulatory regions, as well as the ability to leverage enzymatic conversion, which can yield higher library diversity.

Aim: To describe the cortical brain development and full-IQ performance in middle school age children after extremely preterm (EPT) birth considering discrete white matter abnormalities (WMA). In addition, to assess possible early motor predictors of cortical brain development and full-IQ in children born EPT with and without discrete WMA diagnosed at 10 years.

Methods: T1-weighted MRI images from fifty-one children born before 27 weeks' gestation and 40 full-term born controls (M=10.
