Transfusion-related adverse events involving packed red blood cells (PRBCs) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) are not unusual. Reactions can happen at any time during the transfusion, as well as hours or days later. An acute pain transfusion reaction (APTR) is defined as sudden, intense joint pain, usually in the back and trunk, that appears right after transfusion after all other potential causes of transfusion reactions have been eliminated.
