The biteOscope enables the high-resolution monitoring and video recording of blood-feeding mosquitoes. Mosquito biting is induced by combining host cues, an artificial bloodmeal, a membrane, and a transparent heater in a transparent behavioral arena. Machine vision techniques enable the tracking and pose estimation of individual mosquitoes to discern behavior and resolve individual feeding events. The workflow allows multiple replicates and large amounts of imaging data to be generated rapidly. These data are suitable for downstream analysis using machine learning tools for behavioral analysis, allowing subtle behavioral effects to be characterized.

The Asian malaria vector is invading Africa, requiring it to adapt to novel climates and ecosystems. In part, this may be facilitated by 's poorly understood seasonal behavioural plasticity in flight timing, leading to earlier biting activity in cold Asian winters and later biting times in the warm summer. Changes in behavioural timing could be directly imposed by seasonal variation in ambient light and temperature levels or result from altered entrainment of intrinsically expressed circadian rhythms by these factors.

There are multiple bioactive substances in the mosquito saliva, most of which are allergic to humans. Previous studies have demonstrated that mosquito bites may induce allergic reactions mediated by B and T lymphocytes, resulting in a reduction in the quality of life and even death among patients. Smallholder farmers in most of the rural areas in African countries rear non-descript village chickens for petty cash, food provision and for performing rituals.
