Objectives: To characterise 11 colistin- and carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolates recently emerging in hospital settings.

Methods: A. baumannii isolates were collected from hospitalised patients under colistin treatment in three countries of Southeast Europe: Turkey, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Isolates were identified using molecular methods.

Results: Isolates from Turkey and Croatia belong to the sequence types ST195 or ST281 of the clone lineage 2, while the single isolate from Bosnia and Herzegovina belongs to the ST231 of clone lineage 1. All isolates turned out to be highly resistant to colistin (MIC ≥ 16 mg/L) and have point mutations in pmrCAB operon genes. The colistin-resistant isolate from Bosnia and Herzegovina had a unique P170L point mutation in the pmrB gene and the R125H point mutation in the pmrC gene. The L20S mutation in the pmrA gene was detected only in isolates from Croatia and has never been reported before in isolates from this country.

Conclusion: Colistin resistance in A. baumannii in hospitalised patients receiving colistin treatment is a result of chromosomal mutations. The pattern of point mutations in pmrCAB genes suggests a spread of specific colistin-resistant isolates within the hospital.

Polyploidy is a powerful mechanism driving genetic, physiological, and phenotypic changes among cytotypes of the same species across both large and small geographic scales. These changes can significantly shape population structure and increase the evolutionary and adaptation potential of cytotypes. , an edaphic steno-endemic species with a narrow distribution in the Balkan Peninsula, serves as an intriguing case study.

Resveratrol-Based Carbamates as Selective Butyrylcholinesterase Inhibitors: Design, Synthesis, Computational Study and Biometal Complexation Capability.

Molecules

January 2025

Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb, Trg Marka Marulića 19, HR-10 000 Zagreb, Croatia.

Considering our previous experience in the design of new cholinesterase inhibitors, especially resveratrol analogs, in this research, the basic stilbene skeleton was used as a structural unit for new carbamates designed as potentially highly selective butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitors with excellent absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity ADMET properties. The inhibitory activity of newly prepared carbamates - was tested toward the enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and BChE. In the tested group of compounds, the leading inhibitors were and , which achieved excellent selective inhibitory activity for BChE with IC values of 0.

Pharmacogenetics is a branch of genomic medicine aiming to personalize drug prescription guidelines based on individual genetic information. This concept might lead to a reduction in adverse drug reactions, which place a heavy burden on individual patients' health and the economy of the healthcare system. The aim of this study was to present insights gained from the pharmacogenetics-based clustering of over 500 patients from the Croatian population.
