Two-dimensional conjugated polymers (2DCPs)─organic 2D materials composed of arrays of carbon sp centers connected by π-conjugated linkers─are attracting increasing attention due to their potential applications in device technologies. This interest stems from the ability of 2DCPs to host a range of correlated electronic and magnetic states (e.g., Mott insulators). Substitution of all carbon sp centers in 2DCPs by nitrogen or boron results in diamagnetic insulating states. Partial substitution of C sp centers by B or N atoms has not yet been considered for extended 2DCPs but has been extensively studied in the analogous neutral mixed-valence molecular systems. Here, we employ accurate first-principles calculations to predict the electronic and magnetic properties of a new class of hexagonally connected neutral mixed-valence 2DCPs in which every other C sp nodal center is substituted by either a N or B atom. We show that these neutral mixed-valence 2DCPs significantly energetically favor a state with emergent superexchange-mediated antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between C-based spin-/ centers on a triangular sublattice. These AFM interactions are surprisingly strong and comparable to those in the parent compounds of cuprate superconductors. The rigid and covalently linked symmetric triangular AFM lattice in these materials thus provides a highly promising and robust basis for 2D spin frustration. As such, extended mixed-valence 2DCPs are a highly attractive platform for the future bottom-up realization of a new class of all-organic quantum materials, which could host exotic correlated electronic states (e.g., unusual magnetic ordering, quantum spin liquids).

Cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene (cAAC)-supported phosphaalkenides (cAACP) have been employed as ligands for the isolation of two atomically precise mixed valence paramagnetic AgI/012Cl, and AgI/010, nano-clusters [(Me-cAACP)AgCl] (2), and [(Me-cAACP)Ag](NTf) (4). 2 and 4 have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealing the presence of three Ag atoms, nine Ag ions (2); and two Ag atoms, eight Ag ions (4), respectively. The clustering inorganic unit AgCl in 2 has been found to be surrounded by six mono-anionic μ-cAACP moieties having 3-bar symmetry.

A convenient design strategy opens access to neutral open-shell mixed-valence species the redox transformation of charged stable precursors, , the spiro-fused borate anions. We have implemented this strategy for the synthesis of the first neutral mixed-valence diradical: two neutral mixed-valence radical fragments were assembled a twisted biphenyl bridge. The diradical is a crystalline solid obtained in almost quantitative yield by using a facile synthetic procedure.

The title structure, {[Cu(CHNO)][Cu(CN)]·[Cu(CHNO)(HO)]·HO} , is made up of diperiodic honeycomb CuCN networks built from [Cu(CN)] units, together with two independent Cu complexes: six-coord-inate [Cu(CHCHCH(NH)CHOH)] cations, and five-coordinate [Cu(CHCHCH(NH)CHO)·HO] neutral species. The two Cu complexes are not covalently bonded to the CuCN networks. Strong O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds link the Cu complexes into pairs and the pairs are hydrogen bonded into chains along the crystallographic axis the hydrate water mol-ecule.

Zwitterionic thiolate ligands have the potential to introduce novel assembly modes and functions for noble metal clusters. However, their utilization in the synthesis of silver clusters remains understudied, particularly for the clusters containing reductive Ag(0) species. In this article, we report the first synthesis of a mixed-valence silver(0/I) cluster protected by zwitterionic Tab as thiolate ligands (Tab = 4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate), denoted as [Ag(Tab)](PF)·16CHOH·6EtO (·16CHOH·6EtO), alongside an Ag(I) cluster [Ag(Tab)(PhCOO)(MeCN)(HO)](PF)·11MeCN (·11MeCN).
