In this study, the indirect/direct optical band gaps and spectroscopy properties of Bi /Eu /Yb co-doped ( = 0, 2, 3; and = 2, 3) zinc calcium silicate glasses under different excitation wavelengths were investigated. Zinc calcium silicate glasses with the main compositions of SiO-ZnO-CaF-LaF-TiO were prepared by the conventional melting method. EDS analysis was performed to determine the elemental composition existing in the zinc calcium silicate glasses. Visible (VIS)-, upconversion (UC)-, and near-infrared (NIR)-emission spectra of Bi /Eu /Yb co-doped glasses were also investigated. Indirect optical band gaps and direct optical band gaps of Bi -, Eu - single-doped, and Bi -Eu co-doped SiO-ZnO-CaF-LaF-TiO-BiO-EuF-YbF zinc calcium silicate glasses were calculated and analyzed. CIE 1931(, ) color coordinates for VIS and UC emission spectra of Bi /Eu /Yb co-doped glasses were determined. Besides, the mechanism of VIS-, UC-, NIR-emissions, and energy transfer (ET) processes between Bi and Eu ions were also proposed and discussed.

Intracellular metal ion-based chemistry for programmed cell death.

Intracellular metal ions play essential roles in multiple physiological processes, including catalytic action, diverse cellular processes, intracellular signaling, and electron transfer. It is crucial to maintain intracellular metal ion homeostasis which is achieved by the subtle balance of storage and release of metal ions intracellularly along with the influx and efflux of metal ions at the interface of the cell membrane. Dysregulation of intracellular metal ions has been identified as a key mechanism in triggering programmed cell death (PCD).

Lysosomes are the major cellular organelles responsible for nutrient recycling and degradation of cellular material. Maintenance of lysosomal integrity is essential for cellular homeostasis and lysosomal membrane permeabilization (LMP) sensitizes toward cell death. Damaged lysosomes are repaired or degraded via lysophagy, during which glycans, exposed on ruptured lysosomal membranes, are recognized by galectins leading to K48- and K63-linked poly-ubiquitination (poly-Ub) of lysosomal proteins followed by recruitment of the macroautophagic/autophagic machinery and degradation.

The study aimed to explore the potential use of coal-fired power plant bottom ashes in Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation using spent coffee grounds. The study analyzed five compositions of growth substrate for mushrooms: pure coffee grounds (I) as a control sample; coffee grounds substrate with the addition of 1% (II); 5% (III); 10% (IV) bottom ash; and bottom ash alone (V). The study revealed that compared to the control sample (I), the addition of 1% bottom ash (II) did not affect the time of mycelium growth but slowed fruiting body growth by 4 days.

Deciphering the mineral code of urinary stones: A first look at zinc isotopes.

Environ Pollut

December 2024

Nu Instruments, Wrexham Industrial Estate, 74 Clywedog Road South, Wrexham, LL13 9XS, United Kingdom.

Zinc (Zn) is an essential element for all living organisms, and Zn isotopes play a key role in studying the formation of disease. Despite extensive studies on Zn isotopes in healthy and diseased human tissues, the role of Zn isotopes in urinary stones remains unexplored. This study investigates Zn isotopes in 37 urinary stones using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.
