The results of a complex family and population epidemiologic study of gastric cancer pointed to inheritance as an important factor of the incidence of this disease. However, there may be different combinations of genetic factors, on the one hand, and genetic and environmental ones, on the other, versus age and sex. This should be considered in conducting screening for families at genetic risk for stomach cancer and taking measures aimed at eliminating carcinogenic factors which increase the likelihood of familial cancer incidence. Such considerations should contribute to a certain degree to early diagnosis and prevention of the disease.

Purpose: To report the clinical presentation and follow-up, including the optical coherence tomography, angiography and electrophysiology of two individuals from the same family presenting with an isolated retinal dystrophy and optic nerve edema who were diagnosed with ROSAH-like syndrome.
Method: Observational case report of a 55-year-old woman and her 36-year-old son with a genetic analysis of ROSAH, after a long-term follow-up.
Results: Both the mother and her son displayed severe optic nerve infiltration and retinal pigment atrophy with intraocular inflammation, which were not improved by immunosuppressive treatment.

Using genetic data to infer evolutionary distances between molecular sequence pairs based on a Markov substitution model is a common procedure in phylogenetics, in particular for selecting a good starting tree to improve upon. Many evolutionary patterns can be accurately modelled using substitution models that are available in closed form, including the popular general time reversible model (GTR) for DNA data. For more complex biological phenomena, such as variations in lineage-specific evolutionary rates over time (heterotachy), other approaches such as the GTR with rate variation (GTR ) are required, but do not admit analytical solutions and do not automatically allow for likelihood calculations crucial for Bayesian analysis.
