Pulmonary sarcoid-like granulomatosis induced by aluminum dust: A case report and literature review.

Published: February 2023

Case Report: We present a case of a 48-year-old woman with 27 months of exposure to aluminum dust and silica owing to polishing processing. The patient was admitted to our hospital with intermittent cough and expectoration. Chest high-resolution computed tomography showed diffuse ill-defined centrilobular nodules and patchy ground-glass opacities in bilateral lungs. A video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery biopsy demonstrated multiple isolated and confluent granulomas in an otherwise normal parenchyma without malignancy or signs of infection. Elemental analysis was performed on the grinding wheel powder in the workplace using an X-ray fluorescence spectrometric analyzer, showing 72.7% of AlO and 22.8% of SiO as raw materials. She was diagnosed with aluminum-associated sarcoid-like granulomatous lung disease, rather than sarcoidosis, according to occupational exposure by a multidisciplinary panel.

Conclusion: Occupational aluminum dust exposure may induce pulmonary sarcoid-like granulomatosis recognized by a multidisciplinary diagnostic panel.

Enhanced dust reduction method for solar panels application.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Sharif Center of Excellence in Energy Conversion (CEEC), Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Technology, Azadi Avenue, P. O. Box 11365-9567, Tehran, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • A new dual-layer coating technique for solar panels uses a translucent aluminum zinc oxide film to actively repel dust, enhancing durability and energy efficiency.
  • A secondary TiO2-infused coating, applied through a cost-effective method, passively boosts the panels' ability to stay clean.
  • Tests show that these coatings improve clarity, reduce dust buildup, and maintain energy production even in low-wind conditions, supporting solar energy use in various climates.

Heavy metals: toxicity and human health effects.

Faculty of Chemical and Food Technology, Slovak University of Technology, 812 37, Bratislava, Slovakia.

Heavy metals are naturally occurring components of the Earth's crust and persistent environmental pollutants. Human exposure to heavy metals occurs via various pathways, including inhalation of air/dust particles, ingesting contaminated water or soil, or through the food chain. Their bioaccumulation may lead to diverse toxic effects affecting different body tissues and organ systems.

In this paper, using a 20 L spherical explosive device and a Hartmann device, we carried out explosion suppression experiments on 19 and 30 μm aluminum powders (500 g/m) with different concentrations of the new explosive suppressants (MCM41@CS-APP) and CaCO and elaborated on the suppression mechanism of the explosion of MCM41@CS-APP on aluminum powder. The experimental results show that when the concentration of the explosion suppressor is 50 g/m, the maximum explosion pressure ( ) produced by the explosion of mixed dust is higher than that of the explosion of aluminum powder, and with the increase of the concentration of the deflagration suppressant, the of the mixed dust decreases. When the concentrations of MCM41@CS-APP and CaCO reached 400 g/m, the of the mixed dust (Al = 19 μm) was 0.

This study investigated the concentrations and compositions of specific elements in total suspended particulate (TSP) samples and the associated ecological, carcinogenic, and non-carcinogenic risks related to the inhalation, ingestion, and dermal absorption of heavy metals. The study focused on adult and pediatric populations in the highly dust-polluted city of Zabol, Iran, during 2022-2023. The samples were analyzed by using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

Department of Burn Surgery, the First Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University, Shanghai, China; Research Unit of key techniques for treatment of burns and combined burns and trauma injury, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Shanghai 200433, China. Electronic address:

Background: Sepsis is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality in burn patients. However, the optimal timing of admission which can minimize the probability of sepsis is still unclear. This study aims to determine the optimal time period of admission for severely burned patients and find out the possible reasons for it.
