AI Article Synopsis

  • Patients with COVID-19 can develop a serious fungal infection called mucormycosis, especially if they have uncontrolled diabetes or are on corticosteroids.
  • A 37-year-old male with COVID-19 experienced severe mucormycosis, presenting with abscesses in the gums and dead bone tissue in the upper jaw.
  • Prompt diagnosis and quick treatment are crucial for successfully managing this infection.

Article Abstract

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 makes patients more susceptible to superinfection of fungal disease as a consequence of immunological system impairment. Mucormycosis is a fungal infection that is rare but has a high mortality rate and mostly affects patients with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus or those receiving corticosteroids.

Case Presentation: Here, we present a case of post-coronavirus disease 2019 mucormycosis in a 37-year-old Persian male presenting with multiple periodontal abscess with purulent discharge and necrosis of maxillary bone (without oroantral communication). Surgical debridement following antifungal therapy was the treatment of choice.

Conclusion: Early diagnosis and immediate referral are the cornerstone of comprehensive treatment.

Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a physical activity intervention in adults with lymphoma undergoing treatment.

Pilot Feasibility Stud

January 2025

Department of Internal Medicine - Cardiology, Virginia Commonwealth University, West Hospital 8th Floor, North Wing, Richmond, VA, 23298, USA.

Background: To determine the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a 6-month tailored non-linear progressive physical activity intervention (PAI) for lymphoma patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Methods: Patients newly diagnosed with lymphoma (non-Hodgkin (NHL) or Hodgkin (HL)) were randomized into the PAI or healthy living intervention (HLI) control (2:1). Feasibility was assessed by examining accrual, adherence, and retention rates.

Background: The delivery of cancer services changed significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to describe changes in presentations, assess the change in recommendations by the MDT during the pandemic, and describe the subsequent long-term impact of these changes on survival rates in patients with EG cancer.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was designed comparing three patient groups of those referred to EG MDT in the same 6-month period pre-pandemic (PP;2019) during the initial phase of the pandemic (P1;2020) and the year after the initial phase (P2;2021).

Background: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) quickly spread around the world after its initial identification in Wuhan, China in 2019 and became a global public health crisis. COVID-19 related hospitalizations and deaths as important disease outcomes have been investigated by many studies while less attention has been given to the relationship between these two outcomes at a public health unit level. In this study, we aim to establish the relationship of counts of deaths and hospitalizations caused by COVID-19 over time across 34 public health units in Ontario, Canada, taking demographic, geographic, socio-economic, and vaccination variables into account.

Background: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a disease related to inflammation. Proinflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 17 (IL-17) can induce cancer cell proliferation, metastasis and immune escape. Although NSCLC immune escape is partly due to the interaction between PD-1 and PD-L1 and PD-L1 expression can be upregulated in cancer cells upon stimulation with IL-17, the underlying mechanism of IL-17-triggered PD-L1 gene transcription in NSCLC cells remains elusive.
