Purpose: Studies on intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging in the liver have been carried out with different acquisition protocols. The number of acquired slices and the distances between slices can influence IVIM measurements due to saturation effects, but these effects have often been disregarded. This study investigated differences in biexponential IVIM parameters between two slice settings.

Methods: Fifteen healthy volunteers (21-30 years) were examined at a field strength of 3 T. Diffusion-weighted images of the abdomen were acquired with 16 b values (0-800 s/mm ), with four slices for the few slices setting and 24-27 slices for the many slices setting. Regions of interest were manually drawn in the liver. The data were fitted with a monoexponential signal curve and a biexponential IVIM curve, and biexponential IVIM parameters were determined. The dependence on the slice setting was assessed with Student's t test for paired samples (normally distributed IVIM parameters) and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (non-normally distributed parameters).

Results: None of the parameters were significantly different between the settings. For few slices and many slices, respectively, the mean values (SDs) for were ( ) and ( ); for they were 29.7% (6.2%) and 27.7% (3.6%); and for they were ( ) and ( ).

Conclusion: Biexponential IVIM parameters in the liver are comparable among IVIM studies that use different slice settings, with mostly negligible saturation effects. However, this may not hold for studies that use much shorter TR.

To assess the utility of IVIM parameters in evaluating uterine fibroid blood flow compared to dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) derived blood flow. Sixteen premenopausal women with uterine fibroids were enrolled in this prospective study. Pelvic MRI scans were obtained for each subject, both with and without continuous intravenous infusion of oxytocin, known to decrease significantly uterine fibroid blood flow, to assess the changes in blood flow of uterine fibroids.

Improved deep learning-based IVIM parameter estimation via the use of more "realistic" simulated brain data.

Department of Electronic Science, Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Plasma and Magnetic Resonance, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian, China.

Background: Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the limited number of b-values, precise parameter estimation of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging remains an open issue to date, especially for brain imaging where the relatively small difference between D and D easily leads to outliers and obvious graininess in estimated results.

Purpose: To propose a synthetic data driven supervised learning method (SDD-IVIM) for improving precision and noise robustness in IVIM parameter estimation without relying on real-world data for neural network training.

Methods: On account of the absence of standard IVIM parametric maps from real-world data, a novel model-based method for generating synthetic human brain IVIM data was introduced.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging and arterial spin labeling (ASL) in evaluating renal blood flow in rodent models of acute kidney injury (AKI).
  • Researchers tested three fitting methods on diffusion-weighted imaging data to assess the reliability of pseudo-diffusion parameters and their ability to correlate with renal blood flow.
  • Findings revealed that while ASL effectively detected a significant drop in renal blood flow due to AKI, IVIM's pseudo-diffusion parameters were not reliable or correlated, suggesting the need for careful consideration when interpreting results using IVIM in kidney studies.
