In search of biomarkers for cochlear neural degeneration (CND) in electrocochleography from humans with normal thresholds, we high-pass and low-pass filtered the responses to separate contributions of auditory-nerve action potentials (N) from hair-cell summating potentials (SP). The new N measure is better correlated with performance on difficult word-recognition tasks used as a proxy for CND. Furthermore, the paradoxical correlation between larger SPs and worse word scores, observed with classic electrocochleographic analysis, disappears with the new metric. Classic SP is simultaneous with and opposite in phase to an early neural contribution, and filtering separates the sources to eliminate this interference.

To explore the value of high resolution computed tomography(HRCT) combined with Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) in the diagnosis of inner ear malformation. HRCT and MRI data of 82 patients with inner ear malformations were analyzed retrospectively. HRCT MPR and CPR reconstruction of the inner ear structure, facial nerve canal and oblique sagittal MRI reconstruction of the internal auditory canal were performed.

These malformations, which occur in approximately 0.5 to 3% of conductive hearing loss cases, can arise from various genetic and environmental factors.

Brain function requires a constant supply of glucose. However, the brain has no known energy stores, except for glycogen granules in astrocytes. In the present study, we report that continuous oligodendroglial lipid metabolism provides an energy reserve in white matter tracts.

Speech perception requires the binding of spatiotemporally disjoint auditory-visual cues. The corresponding brain network-level information processing can be characterized by two complementary mechanisms: functional segregation which refers to the localization of processing in either isolated or distributed modules across the brain, and integration which pertains to cooperation among relevant functional modules. Here, we demonstrate using functional magnetic resonance imaging recordings that subjective perceptual experience of multisensory speech stimuli, real and illusory, are represented in differential states of segregation-integration.
