Purpose: This study aims to use "both-and" thinking of Yin-Yang philosophy to extend the field of leadership literatures and explore the influences of paradoxical leadership and emotional intelligence on organizational identification and turnover intentions of nurses.

Design/methodology/approach: The authors adopted a cross-sectional survey completed by 285 nurses in Taiwan. SPSS 22, PROCESS and AMOS 21 were used for data analysis.

Findings: The results reveal that paradoxical leadership has a significant positive relationship with nurses' organizational identification and a significant negatively relationship with their turnover intentions, and organizational identification partially mediated the relationship between paradoxical leadership and turnover intentions. The results further show that emotional intelligence strengthens the effect of paradoxical leadership on organizational identification, and paradoxical leadership had a stronger indirect effect on turnover intentions through organizational identification under strong emotional intelligence.

Originality/value: Paradoxical leadership can strengthen managers' abilities in dealing with interrelated and substantial issues and correspond to organizing and belonging paradoxes in holistic thinking processes. Health-care organizations must shape a coordinated institution and offer training initiatives to increase managers' ability and attitude to control organizational rules and procedures while allowing employees' flexibility and autonomy according to the requirements of the situation, which will maintain both organizational short-term benefits and long-term growth.

The purpose of the present study was to understand how executives responsible for Diversity and Inclusion construct their identities while occupying positions of "Marginal Leadership," and how they deal with threats to such identities. We conducted qualitative and inductive research with Brazilian executives in 66 organizations, focusing on their experiences as leaders. In our resulting model, we theorized that leaders in positions of Marginal Leadership demonstrate little role clarity, resources, and confidence for the exercise of their activities, suffering threats to their identities, which are not observed in executives occupying positions in more traditional functions such as Finance, Production, and Marketing.

Prior research has examined self-leadership as a proactive self-regulatory approach for the management of stress and anxiety in college students. However, little is known about the possible negative effects of self-regulatory approaches such as self-leadership. Using the transactional model of stress and coping and the interaction model of stress, anxiety, and coping as theoretical frameworks, this study investigates a parallel multiple mediation model of the relationship between self-leadership and state anxiety as mediated by adaptive coping behaviours and maladaptive coping behaviours in a sample of 143 undergraduate students.

Nutritional status and gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms: lights and shadows with a clinical guide from the NIKE Group.

Rev Endocr Metab Disord

December 2024

Endocrinology Unit, Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, Sant'Andrea Hospital, European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) Center of Excellence, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) originating in the gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tract are rare tumors often associated with significant metabolic disturbances and nutritional challenges. This review explores the intricate relationship between nutritional status and the development, progression, and prognosis of GEP-NENs. Through an extensive literature search encompassing studies up to April 2024, we examined various factors, including obesity, malnutrition, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and their roles in the development and progression of GEP-NENs.

Microstructural analysis does not support altered interhemispheric wiring of the human anterior commissure in corpus callosum dysgenesis.

Background: Individuals with corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCD) lack the clear disconnection syndrome that is characteristic of individuals in whom the corpus callosum has been surgically severed. One potential explanation for this paradox is that the anterior commissure undergoes neuroplastic remodeling in CCD to improve interhemispheric communication between the brain hemispheres.

Methods: A cohort of sixteen individuals with CCD (and sixteen sex and age-matched neurotypical controls) underwent multi-shell diffusion magnetic resonance high-field imaging (dMRI) at 7-Tesla to assess the anatomy of the anterior commissure for evidence of neuroplasticity.

The Mortality of Politics: An American Paradox.

Fetal Diagn Ther

October 2024

Lancaster Maternal Fetal Medicine, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The United States has worse health statistics compared to other wealthy countries, partly because some states didn't accept federal health programs.
  • Analyzing each state, it was found that Republican-leaning states had higher COVID deaths and lower life expectancy, especially if they had the same vaccination rates as Democratic states.
  • Overall, the Republican vote percentage related to poorer health outcomes, and while the Affordable Care Act helped some access to care, it created areas with limited maternity care in rural Republican states.
