Our current prospective cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the effect of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs used in the treatment of retinopathy of prematurity on retinal maturation and persistent avascular retina (PAR). Retinal imaging was performed with Optos confocal laser ophthalmoscopy for 100 patients aged 4 to 8 years who were screened and treated for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) during the neonatal period. The ROP examination findings (stage and zone) and treatment history (age in weeks at time of treatment and anti-VEGF drug used) from the neonatal period were reviewed.

Laser-Induced Graphene Electrodes for Flexible pH Sensors.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Applied Science and Technology, Politecnico di Torino, Corso Duca Degli Abruzzi 24, 10129 Turin, Italy.

In the growing field of personalized medicine, non-invasive wearable devices and sensors are valuable diagnostic tools for the real-time monitoring of physiological and biokinetic signals. Among all the possible multiple (bio)-entities, pH is important in defining health-related biological information, since its variations or alterations can be considered the cause or the effect of disease and disfunction within a biological system. In this work, an innovative (bio)-electrochemical flexible pH sensor was proposed by realizing three electrodes (working, reference, and counter) directly on a polyimide (Kapton) sheet through the implementation of CO laser writing, which locally converts the polymeric sheet into a laser-induced graphene material (LIG electrodes), preserving inherent mechanical flexibility of Kapton.

Photodynamic Therapy Using IR-783 Liposomes for Advanced Tongue and Breast Cancers in Humans.

J Funct Biomater

December 2024

Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Keio University School of Medicine, 35 Shinanomachi, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-8582, Japan.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a minimally invasive treatment that elicits tumor apoptosis using laser light exclusively applied to the tumor site. IR-783, a heptamethine cyanine (HMC) dye, impedes the proliferation of breast cancer cells, even without light. Although studies have investigated the efficacy of IR-783 in cell and animal studies, its efficacy in clinical settings remains unknown.

Polymer-based organic electrodes for rechargeable batteries are attractive due to their design flexibility, sustainability, and environmental compatibility. Unfortunately, waste management of conventional polymer materials typically involves incineration, which emits greenhouse gases. Consequently, degradable polymers should be ideal candidates for future green batteries.

An Augmented Reality Visor for Intraoperative Visualization, Guidance, and Temperature Monitoring Using Fluorescence.

J Biophotonics

December 2024

Nanoparticle Systems Engineering Laboratory, Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT), Institute of Energy and Process Engineering (IEPE), ETH Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Fluorescence-guided surgeries, including tumor resection and tissue soldering, are advancing the frontiers of surgical precision by offering enhanced control that minimizes tissue damage, improving recovery and outcomes. However, integrating fluorescence visualization with real-time temperature monitoring remains a challenge, limiting broader clinical use. We address this issue with an augmented reality (AR) visor that combines nanomaterial excitation, fluorescence detection, and temperature monitoring.
