AI Article Synopsis

  • The study explores how the timing of surgery for pectus excavatum (PE) impacts children's academic performance, revealing that surgery before puberty may benefit their social and educational development.
  • The research included 480 PE patients, comparing those who underwent the Nuss procedure to those who were simply observed over a period of 6 years.
  • Results indicated that academic performance declined for nonsurgical patients, while those who had surgery showed better performance, suggesting that early surgical intervention is more favorable for children with significant PE.

Article Abstract

Background: The optimal timing of surgery for pectus excavatum (PE) is controversial. A large proportion of children will not undergo surgery before puberty. However, untimely surgery may lead to a decline in the children's social adaptation and competitiveness because the children have already developed psychological and physiological impairments due to PE at an early age. The study retrospectively compared the academic performance in PE children undergoing the Nuss procedure nonsurgical observation.

Methods: This retrospective real-world research study included 480 PE patients with definite surgical indications, in whom it was first recommended that they undergo surgery between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. Academic performance was collected at baseline and 6 years later. A generalized linear regression was calculated to screen the factors affecting the performance. A propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was conducted to reduce the potential for confounding factors between surgical and nonsurgical PE patients.

Results: Haller index (HI) and pulmonary function were recognized as factors affecting baseline performance according to the generalized linear regression. For PE children with surgical indications, their academic performance significantly declined after 6 years of nonsurgical observation (52.1% ± 17.1% 58.3% ± 16.7%,  = 0.042). The academic performance in the surgery group was better than that in the nonsurgery group 6 years after PSM (60.7% ± 17.7% 52.1% ± 17.1%,  = 0.008).

Conclusions: The severity of PE will affect the academic performance of children. For PE children with definite surgical indications between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, surgical intervention rather than nonsurgical observation is more conducive to the development of children's academic performance.

Background: Access-related vascular complications (VCs) after percutaneous transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) are associated with poor clinical outcomes and remain a significant challenge despite technological advances. The aim of this study was to identify anatomic predictors of access-related VCs after TAVR on preprocedural contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography (MDCT).

Along with the development of miniaturization, integration, and high power of electronic chips in the 5G and artificial intelligence era and their urgent need for technologies enabled to solve high heat flux dissipation in limited space, investigating bioinspired extreme superwettability surfaces with high-efficiency condensation heat transfer (CHT) performance has attracted great interest in academic and industrial communities. Compared with filmwise condensation of flat hydrophilic surfaces featured with continuous liquid films, dropwise condensation of flat hydrophobic surfaces is a more efficient type of energy transport way. However, discrete condensate drops can only shed off the hydrophobic flat surfaces under gravity until their sizes reach the capillary length of liquid, e.

Objective: The objective of this pilot study is to evaluate the feasibility of using an automatic weight management system to follow patients' response to weight reduction medications and to identify early deviations from weight trajectories.

Methods: The pilot study involved 11 participants using Semaglutide for weight management, monitored over a 12-month period. A cloud-based, Wi-Fi-enabled remote weight management system collected and analyzed daily weight data from smart scales.
