Background: Supporting limb laminitis (SLL) is a complication of severe orthopedic disease in horses and is often life-limiting, yet the pathophysiology remains obscure.

Hypothesis/objectives: To investigate the role of digital lamellar inflammatory signaling in the pathophysiology of SLL using a model of unilateral weight bearing, hypothesizing that there would be evidence of lamellar inflammation in limbs subjected to the model.

Animals: Thirteen healthy adult Standardbred horses were used for this study (11 geldings, 2 mares; mean age 6.5 ± 2.5 years; mean body weight 458.3 ± 32.8 kg).

Methods: Randomized controlled experimental study. A steel shoe with a custom insert was applied to a randomly selected front foot of 7 horses; 6 horses were unshod and served as controls. After 92 hours, all horses were humanely euthanized, and digital lamellar samples were collected. Lamellar protein and mRNA were isolated and used to perform western blot and PCR.

Results: Lamellar concentrations of IL-6 mRNA were higher in SL tissue than IL HIND tissue (median [25%-75%] normalized copy number 191 [111-3060] and 48 [25-74], respectively; P=.003), and lamellar concentrations of COX-2 mRNA were higher in SL tissue than CON tissue (normalized copy number 400 [168-634] and 125 [74-178], respectively; P=.007). Lamellar concentrations of IL-1B, IL-10, and COX-1 mRNA were not significantly different between groups. The concentrations of phosphorylated (activated) STAT1 and STAT3 proteins were higher in SL (0.5 [0.35-0.87] and 1.35 [1.1-1.7], respectively) compared to CON (0.24 [0.09-0.37] and 0.31 [0.16-037]) and UL HIND (0.27 [0.19-0.37] and 0.38 [0.24-0.5]); P=0.01 and P<0.001.

Conclusions And Clinical Importance: Lamellar inflammatory signaling was higher in tissue from horses subjected to prolonged unilateral weight-bearing, suggesting that these pathways could be relevant to the pathophysiology of SLL.

Evaluation of digital radiographic measurements for the diagnosis of acute laminitis.

Equine Vet J

November 2024

Department of Clinical Studies-New Bolton Center, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, USA.

Background: Traditional radiographic measurements of distal phalanx (Pd) displacement based on the outer hoof wall are not useful for diagnosis of acute laminitis.

Objectives: We hypothesised that the distance between the inner hoof wall and Pd ('lamellar lucent zone'; LLZ) measured on lateromedial digital radiographs would be increased in horses with acute and subacute laminitis compared with healthy horses.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study and in vivo experimental study.

Programmable heterogeneous lamellar lattice architecture for dual mechanical protection.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

HP-NTU Digital Manufacturing Corporate Lab, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 639798, Singapore.

Shear bands frequently appear in lattice architectures subjected to compression, leading to an unstable stress-strain curve and global deformation. This deformation mechanism reduces their energy absorption and loading-bearing capacity and causes the architectures to prioritize mechanical protection of external components at the expense of the entire structure. Here, we leverage the design freedom offered by additive manufacturing and the geometrical relation of dual-phase nanolamellar crystals to fabricate heterogeneous lamellar lattice architectures consisting of body-centered cubic (BCC) and face-centered cubic (FCC) unit cells in alternating lamella.

Prevalence of concha bullosa in a pediatric population.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

Department of Radiology, Children's Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado, 13123 E 16th Ave, Aurora, 80045, CO, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of concha bullosa (CB), a variation in nasal anatomy, in children using CT scans, as existing research is limited.
  • Out of 695 children analyzed, 384 were included in the study, revealing that 39.8% had CB, with a higher prevalence in children over 4 years old.
  • The most common type of CB was lamellar, and there was a noted association between CB and congenital nasal septal deviation, indicating that as the severity of CB increases, so does the severity of septal deviation.

Successful treatment of forelimb osteochondroma in a ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

Top Companion Anim Med

September 2024

Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA. Electronic address:

A 1-year-old male neutered ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was evaluated for an abnormal left cubital joint. Radiographs demonstrated a proliferative osseous lesion of the left proximal antebrachium. Computed tomography confirmed a large thin-walled expansile osseous lesion of the left proximal radius and identified multifocal proliferative lesions of the axial spine, two of which caused spinal cord compression.
