Importance: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common, chronic, cardiac arrythmia in older US adults. It is not known whether AF is independently associated with increased risk of retinal stroke (central retinal artery occlusion), a subtype of ischemic stroke that causes severely disabling visual loss in most cases and is a harbinger of further vascular events.
Objective: To determine whether there is an association between AF and retinal stroke.

Background: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disease characterized by loss of memory and cognitive decline associated with an increase in ß-amyloid (Aß) plaque deposition, neurofibrillary tangle formation (NFT) and inflammation. Fundus Autofluorescein (FAF) can detect lipofuscin secreted by misfolded plaques during the neurodegeneration process. And Optical Scanning Tomography ( OCT ) is able to find out the retinal layers of the accumulation ( inner retinal layers in AD ).

December 2024
King's College London, Strand, London, United Kingdom.
Background: The prevalence of dementia in low- and middle-income countries is increasing, yet epidemiological data from African populations remains scarce. Crucial risk factors differ in Africa from more intensively studied global areas, including a high burden of cerebrovascular disease (evidenced by high stroke incidence) and HIV, but lower rates of other risk factors such as physical inactivity. In the pre-antiretroviral therapy era, dementia was a common consequence of HIV infection.

Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a bilateral, chronic posterior uveitis with characteristic clinical and imaging findings. Multimodal imaging including optical coherence tomography, fluorescein, and indocyanine green angiography is useful in diagnosis, as well as monitoring disease activity. Cystoid macular edema, choroidal thickening and infiltration, ellipsoid loss, and vasculitis are important imaging markers for disease activity.
