In neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), neuroprotection mediated by therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is the standard of care in developed nations; however TH may be not beneficial or contraindicated in developing world. Moreover, in most of the clinical trials, hypothermic neuroprotection was incomplete because many infants still die or suffer significant neurological sequelae. Therefore, finding innovative, neuroprotective compounds for this encephalopathy represents an important and urgent need. In reference to the recent review by Zhou , 2023 14, 1-9, in this viewpoint, we discuss the therapeutic role of ketone bodies and thiamine in neonatal HIE, their possible synergistic effect, and how these micronutrients may provide additive neuroprotection to TH and improve safer and effective treatment strategies also helpful in low-middle-income countries.

Introduction: Infantile Epileptic Spasms Syndrome (IESS) typically has a profound impact on the neurodevelopment of patients. The study on IESS indicates possible geographical variation in etiology and a lack of data from China. Our study intends to summarize the etiology of IESS and analyze its characteristics.

Background: Finding an accurate and simple method of thermometry in the neonatal intensive care unit is important. The temporal artery thermometer (TAT) has been recommended for all ages by the manufacturer; however, there is insufficient evidence for the use of TAT in infants, especially to detect hypothermia.
Purpose: To assess the accuracy of the TAT in hypothermic neonates in comparison to a rectal thermometer.

This study aimed to evaluate the hemodynamic and ventricular performance of neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) undergoing therapeutic hypothermia using conventional and advanced echocardiographic techniques. This observational, prospective study included 22 neonates with HIE matched with 22 healthy neonates. Echocardiographic studies were performed 24 h after achieving target temperature during hypothermia and 24 h after rewarming.

Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the pathology of hypoxia-ischemia (HI) brain damage by aberrant production of ROS. Hydrogen sulfide (HS) has been demonstrated to exert neuroprotective effects through antioxidant mechanisms. However, the diffusion of HS is not specifically targeted and may even be systemically toxic.

The biochemical composition and structure of the brain are in a rapid change during the exuberant stage of fetal and neonatal development. H-MRS is a noninvasive tool that can evaluate brain metabolites in healthy fetuses and infants as well as those with neurological diseases. This review aims to provide readers with an understanding of 1) the basic principles and technical considerations relevant to H-MRS in the fetal-neonatal brain and 2) the role of H-MRS in early fetal-neonatal development brain research.
