Urbanization is an inevitable process in human social progress; additionally, the ecological environment is the carrier and foundation of human social development. Considering central Shanghai, China, as an example, this study quantitatively analyzed the coupling coordination relationship between urbanization and the ecological environment based on urban functional zones; remote sensing images, Open Street Map roads, and point of interest data were analyzed for the urban functional zones the remote sensing-based ecological index (RSEI), comprehensive nighttime light index (CNLI), and coupling coordination degree (D). The results revealed that urban functional zones in central Shanghai were mainly mixed functional zones and comprehensive functional zones, which formed a spatial structure that gradually radiated outward from the urban core. Additionally, CNLI values were high; the proportion of CNLI between 0.6 and 1 was 94.37%. Moreover, the RSEI showed spatial differentiation; it was low in the center and gradually increased outward. Additionally, D was at the primary coordination level. The coupling coordination type in the core area corresponded to an ecological environment lag, which gradually transitioned to a state of systematic balanced development from the core area outward, but showed sluggish urbanization in some areas. This quantitative analysis of the coupling coordination between urbanization and the ecological environment based on urban functional zones provides effective scientific references for optimization of spatial planning.

Effect of air temperature in indoor transition spaces on the thermal response of occupant during summer.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Innovation Institute for Sustainable Maritime Architecture Research and Technology, Qingdao University of Technology, Qingdao, 266033, People's Republic of China.

During the hot summer months, the significant temperature disparity between outdoor and indoor air-conditioned spaces can lead to thermal discomfort and pose a potential health risk. Transition areas such as corridors and elevator lobbies, serving as intermediary zones connecting indoors and outdoors, have been found effective in mitigating this thermal discomfort. In this study, three different temperatures (25 °C-case 1, 27 °C-case 2, and 29 °C-case 3) were employed to investigate the dynamic physiological regulation and thermal perception response of individuals when transitioning from an outdoor environment into an indoor neutral room through a transition space.

This study investigates the biosynthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (FeONPs) using the cell-free supernatant of Pseudomonas fluorescens. The synthesized FeONPs were characterized through UV-VIS, XRD, FTIR, FESEM, EDX, TEM, BET, and VSM analyses. The XRD results confirmed that FeONPs were successfully synthesized and EDX analysis indicated that iron accounted for 89.

Aim: This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the impact of different incision types (oblique, vertical, and horizontal) for hamstring graft harvest on sensory disturbances and functional outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Methods: A total of 118 patients were randomized into three groups: oblique incision (n = 40), vertical incision (n = 40), and horizontal incision (n = 38). Sensory deficits were assessed using Von Frey Filaments at three weeks, three months, and six months postoperatively.

Navigating water security: A sustainability evaluation in basin socio-ecological systems. The Grande River basin case study, Antioquia-Colombia.

Sci Total Environ

Departamento de Geociencias y Medio Ambiente - Facultad de Minas- Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Medellín, Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia. Electronic address:

Socio-ecological sustainability arises from interactions between natural and social systems. Sustainability in water security means effectively managing water resources to continuously achieve social goals without surpassing ecological limits to maintain or enhance ecological integrity and social well-being. Despite efforts to measure sustainability focused on water security, challenges remain, such as selecting indicators that capture socio-ecological dynamics and defining appropriate aggregation methods.

The scientific establishment of the Ecological Security Pattern (ESP) is crucial for fostering the synergistic development of ecological and recreational functions, thereby enhancing urban ecological protection, recreational development, and sustainable growth. This study aimed to propose a novel method of constructing ESP considering both ecological and recreational functions, and to reconstruct ESP by weighing the relationship between ecological protection and recreational development. Utilizing Fuzhou City as a case study, a comprehensive application of methodologies including Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis (MSPA), landscape connectivity analysis, ArcGIS spatial analysis, social network analysis (SNA), and circuit theory is employed to develop both the ESP and the Recreational Spatial Pattern (RSP).
