AI Article Synopsis

  • This study compared the effectiveness of providing orthodontic treatment information to parents through either written materials (leaflet) or an animated video.
  • Parents of patients aged 12-18 were randomly assigned to one of two groups and their recall of information was assessed immediately and one year later.
  • Results showed no significant difference in information recall between the two groups, but the animation method saved time during the clinician's explanation.

Article Abstract

Objectives: This "2-arm parallel" trial investigated the recall of information pertinent to obtaining informed consent of parents of orthodontic patients using; either written material and verbal support or an animation.

Materials And Methods: Parents of patients, aged 12-18 years, about to undergo fixed applaince treatment, were randomized to either receive information by leaflet or by watching an animation. The parents were asked a series of open-ended questions immediately and one year later. The outcome measure was the total median questionnaire score immediately (T) and one year later (T). A Mann Whitney test was performed to test for differences between T and T.

Results: 31 parents were randomized into the leaflet group and 33 in to the animation group. The median leaflet group score was 81 (IQR = 27) at the time of consent (T) and 87 (IQR = 29) a year later (T), compared to a median score of 76 (IQR = 23) for the animation group at T and 87 (IQR = 32) at T Statistically, there was no difference in the questionnaire score at (T) (p = 0.567) and at (T) (p = 0.522). The average time spent with the clinician in the leaflet group was an additional 9 min in the animation group.

Conclusion: The use of a leaflet and verbal information or an animation are equivalent in providing information to the parents of orthodontic patients. The use of an animation reduces the clinical time needed to deliver the information.

Background: Subclinical leaflet thrombosis (SLT) is a common complication after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Multidimensional CT (MDCT) is the main imaging mortality for the diagnosis of SLT but it enhances the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy. Our study aimed to use an innovative wearable acoustic cardiography (ACG) device to diagnose SLT as an alternative option.

Background: Mitral valve transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) was initially indicated for central degenerative mitral regurgitation (DMR) lesions, but advancements in technology have enabled successful treatment in an increasing number of noncentral DMR patients.

Aims: This study aims to compare procedural outcomes and prognosis between noncentral DMR patients, outside clinical trial anatomical criteria, and central DMR patients undergoing M-TEER.

Methods: Drug-refractory moderate-to-severe DMR patients treated with M-TEER at Fuwai Hospital from January 2021 to February 2024 were retrospectively analyzed.

Background: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most common congenital heart defect (reported incidence of 0.5%-2%) and is commonly associated with proximal aortic dilation. Patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) of BAV have been shown to have worse pre-operative left ventricular (LV) function as well as a higher incidence of post-operative heart failure hospitalization when compared with analogous patients with tri-leaflet aortic valve disease.
