Calcium carbonate formation is the primary pathway by which carbon is returned from the ocean-atmosphere system to the solid Earth. The removal of dissolved inorganic carbon from seawater by precipitation of carbonate minerals-the marine carbonate factory-plays a critical role in shaping marine biogeochemical cycling. A paucity of empirical constraints has led to widely divergent views on how the marine carbonate factory has changed over time. Here we use geochemical insights from stable strontium isotopes to provide a new perspective on the evolution of the marine carbonate factory and carbonate mineral saturation states. Although the production of carbonates in the surface ocean and in shallow seafloor settings have been widely considered the predominant carbonate sinks for most of the history of the Earth, we propose that alternative processes-such as porewater production of authigenic carbonates-may have represented a major carbonate sink throughout the Precambrian. Our results also suggest that the rise of the skeletal carbonate factory decreased seawater carbonate saturation states.

We investigated the metabolome of the iron- and sulfur-oxidizing, extremely thermoacidophilic archaeon grown on mineral pyrite (FeS). The extraction of organic materials from these microorganisms is a major challenge because of the tight contact and interaction between cells and mineral materials. Therefore, we applied an improved protocol to break the microbial cells and separate their organic constituents from the mineral surface, to extract lipophilic compounds through liquid-liquid extraction, and performed metabolomics analyses using MALDI-TOF MS and UHPLC-UHR-Q/TOF.

Global oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) often reach hypoxia but seldom reach anoxia. Recently it was reported that Michaelis Menten constants (K) of oxidative enzymes are orders of magnitude higher than respiratory K values, and in the Hypoxic Barrier Hypothesis it was proposed that, in ecosystems experiencing falling oxygen, oxygenase enzyme activities become oxygen-limited long before respiration. We conducted a mesocosm experiment with a phytoplankton bloom as an organic carbon source and controlled dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in the dark to determine whether hypoxia slows carbon oxidation and oxygen decline.

Alginate films were prepared from the brown seaweed Dictyota mertensii using glycerol as a plasticizer. The effects of extraction conditions-time, temperature, and NaCO concentration-on the optical, barrier, and mechanical properties of the films were investigated using a central composite design (CCD). ANOVA and F tests confirmed the models' statistical significance at p ≤ 0.

Carbon neutrality of bioactive materials is vital in promoting sustainable development for human society. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) is a class of typical carbon-cycle bio-polyesters synthesized by microorganisms using sugars, organic acids, and even carbon dioxide. PHAs first degrade into 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) before further breaking down into carbon dioxide and water, aligning with carbon-neutral goals.

Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) is one of the most pivotal factors of the TNF family and plays an essential biological role in immunity. However, the antibacterial function and mechanism of TNFα in teleosts are relatively poorly understood. In this study, a novel TNFα from Trachinotus ovatus (TroTNFα) was characterized.
