Feline glaucoma is best categorized as either secondary, congenital and anterior segment dysgenesis associated, or primary. More than 90% of all feline glaucoma develops secondary to uveitis or intraocular neoplasia. The uveitis is usually idiopathic and assumed to be immune-mediated, whereas lymphosarcoma and diffuse iridal melanoma account for many of the intraocular neoplastic-induced glaucoma in cats. Several topical and systemic therapies are useful in the control of the inflammation and elevated intraocular pressures associated with feline glaucoma. Enucleation remains the recommended therapy for blind glaucomatous feline eyes. Enucleated globes from cats with chronic glaucoma should be submitted to an appropriate laboratory for histologic confirmation of the type of glaucoma.

Effective strategies for the neuroprotection and preservation of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) remain elusive in the management of glaucoma. A spontaneous genetic model of glaucoma has been identified in cats and extensively characterized as a viable translational model, with eye size and anatomy similar to humans. In this study we sought to establish initial proof of concept for gene delivery to feline RGCs via intravitreal injection of AAV2 in normal cats.

Purpose: To characterize early trabecular meshwork (TM) morphologic abnormalities in a feline model of human primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) caused by mutation in LTBP2.
Methods: Eyes from 41 cats, including 19 normal and 22 homozygous for LTBP2 mutation, across various postnatal stages (birth, 2 weeks, 5 weeks, and 12 weeks) were paraformaldehyde fixed, anterior segments dissected, post-fixed in glutaraldehyde, osmicated, and processed and sectioned for transmission electron microscopy. Cell morphology, nuclear shape, and intertrabecular space (ITS) were quantitatively assessed, and the structure of the fibrillar extracellular matrix in the TM was systematically evaluated.
