NPs can identify risk for sudden cardiac death in children during physical exams to prevent tragedy. The updated American Academy of Pediatrics 2021 policy statement on this issue provides guidance on using a combination of elements to determine and manage risk, including the organization's own 4-question screening tool, the American Heart Association 14-Element Preparticipation Cardiovascular Screening of Young Competitive Athletes, personal history, family history, physical exam, ECG, and cardiology referral as indicated.

Pulmonary arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disease marked by significant morbidity and mortality due to pulmonary vasculopathy and right ventricular (RV) dysfunction. Despite advances in PAH medical therapies which have improved clinical outcomes and survival, patients continue to face severe complications, including a notable incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD). The high arrhythmic burden, coupled with mechanical complications such as left main compression syndrome, pulmonary artery dissection, rupture, and severe hemoptysis, significantly contribute to the risk of SCD.

Sudden death after myocardial infarction (MI) is associated with electrophysiological heterogeneities and ionic current remodelling. Low ejection fraction (EF) is used in risk stratification, but its mechanistic links with pro-arrhythmic heterogeneities are unknown.
