Clinical and anatomical features of myopia.

Asia Pac J Ophthalmol (Phila)

December 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Cologne, University Hospital Cologne, Cologne, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • The review summarizes the clinical and anatomical aspects of myopia, highlighting the different stages of myopic maculopathy (MMP) and their association with retinal changes.
  • Recent findings show that MMP stage-4 is linked to defects in Bruch's membrane and previous macular neovascularization, while stage-3 demonstrates differences based on the presence of these defects.
  • Additionally, higher axial lengths in myopic eyes correlate with increased risks for vision loss and certain eye conditions, including open-angle glaucoma, emphasizing the complexity and implications of myopia in aging populations.

A case of acute idiopathic maculopathy in both eyes with peripheral vascular occlusion.

BMC Ophthalmol

November 2024

Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Ophthalmology and Visual Science Key Laboratory, Beijing, 00730, China.

Background: This study aimed to present a case of bilateral symmetric onset of acute idiopathic maculopathy after high fever with peripheral vascular occlusion.

Case Presentation: A 54-year-old yellow female experienced acute binocular visual acuity decrease after 1 day of high fever, and binocular visual acuity decreased to index or anterior. OCT in the external hospital showed dome-shaped cortical detachment in the symmetrical macular area of both eyes with subretinal fluid, discontinuity in the ellipsoid zone and the chimera.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates dome-shaped macula (DSM) in preterm and full-term infants using advanced optical imaging technology, highlighting increased occurrence in preterm infants.
  • Out of 217 imaging sessions, DSM was found in 40% of preterm infants compared to 14% of full-term infants, showing a significant difference in diagnosis timing and dome characteristics.
  • The results suggest that while DSM is common in infants and typically round in shape, it isn't linked to macular fluid presence, indicating unique differences from DSM in older children and adults.

Prevalence and associations of dome-shaped maculas. The Beijing Eye Study.

Acta Ophthalmol

September 2024

Beijing Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Key Laboratory, Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the occurrence of dome-shaped maculas (DSMs) in a diverse population, focusing on those with different axial lengths of the eye.
  • Out of 3468 participants, DSMs were found in 1.9% of examined eyes, with a notable increase in prevalence among highly myopic individuals (7.2%).
  • Results suggest that longer axial lengths and more advanced myopic macular degeneration are linked to higher DSM prevalence and height, indicating potential underlying factors related to eye elongation and retinal health.

Article Synopsis
  • A 33-year-old male experienced vision loss in his right eye after developing hand, foot, and mouth disease, with accompanying vesicular lesions and oral ulcers.
  • Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) revealed reduced blood flow in the choriocapillaris and bacillary layer detachment (BALAD) in the affected eye, indicating retinal issues.
  • The condition showed resolution in BALAD within two days, and choriocapillaris flow gradually improved over two months, suggesting a link between UAIM and systemic inflammation from the viral infection.
