Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) show wide potential applications in the field of ultrahigh-density storage materials, quantum computing, spintronics, and so on. Lanthanide (Ln) SMMs, as an important category of SMMs, open up a promising prospect due to their large magnetic moments and huge magnetic anisotropy. However, the construction of high performance for Ln SMMs remains an enormous challenge. Although remarkable advances are focused on the topic of Ln SMMs, the research on Ln SMMs with different nuclear numbers is still deficient. Therefore, this review summarizes the design strategies for the construction of Ln SMMs, as well as the metal skeleton types. Furthermore, we collect reported Ln SMMs with mononuclearity, dinuclearity, and multinuclearity (three or more Ln spin centers) and the SMM properties including energy barrier (U ) and pre-exponential factor (τ ) are described. Finally, Ln SMMs with low-nuclearity SMMs, especially for single-ion magnets (SIMs), are highlighted to understand the correlations between structures and magnetic behavior of the detail SMM properties are described. We expect the review can shed light on the future developments of high-performance Ln SMMs.

Article Synopsis
  • Extended ligand conjugation improves luminescent thermometry in Dy-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs) through crystallographic, photoluminescence, and lifetime decay studies.
  • This enhancement allows for effective energy transfer from the ligands to the Dy metal centers.
  • The results show a significant excited-state lifetime of Dy(III), indicating efficient interactions due to the ligand modifications.

Lanthanide-based Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) with optical and magnetic properties provide a means to understand intrinsic energy levels of 4f ions and their influence on optical and magnetic behaviour. Fundamental understanding of their luminescent and slow relaxation of the magnetization behaviour is critical for targeting and designing SMMs with multiple functionalities. Herein, we seek to investigate the role of Dy coordination environment and fine electronic structure on the slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence thermometry.

Air-stable single-molecule magnets (SMMs) can be obtained by confining Dy ion in a coordination environment; however, most of the current efforts were focused on modifying the rigidity of the macrocycle ligand. Herein, we attempt to assemble air-stable SMMs based on macrocycles with a replaceable coordination site. By using an in situ 1 + 1 Schiff-base reaction of dialdehyde with diamine, three air-stable SMMs have been obtained in which one of the equatorial coordination sites can be varied from -NH- (for ), -O- (for ), and -NMe- (for ).

Searching for single-molecule magnets (SMM) with large effective blocking barriers, long relaxation times, and high magnetic blocking temperatures is vitally important not only for the fundamental research of magnetism at the molecular level but also for the realization of new-generation magnetic memory unit. Actinides (An) atoms possess extremely strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) due to their 5 orbitals, and their ground multiplets are largely split into several sublevels because of the strong interplay between the SOC of An atoms and the crystal field (CF) formed by ligand atoms. Compared to TM-based SMMs, more dispersed energy level widths of An-based SMMs will give a larger total zero field splitting (ZFS) and thus provide a necessary condition to derive a higher .

Design and synthesis of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have long been a research focus. Inspired by the best dysprosium(III) metallocene SMMs and dysprosium(III) bis(methanediide) SMMs, we assumed dysprosium SMMs, which had electrical neutrality by combining the two types of ligands. As the Dy center is coordinated by one (substituted-)cyclopentadienyl (Cp) ligand and one methanediide ({C(PPhNSiMe)}) ligand on the axial sites, this ideal structure with linear C-Dy-Cp would strengthen the magnetic anisotropy and exhibit excellent SMM properties.
