Long span base metal alloy fixed prosthesis and partial dental prosthesis frameworks most often require welding for better fit and adaptation. The type of metal alloys used and its effect on the weld strength of the prosthesis have to be investigated. The aim of the study is to comparatively analyze the weld strength of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) and cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) base metal alloys when subjected to tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding. 10 nickel- and cobalt-based specimens were obtained by casting of castable resin patterns of dimension 25 mm × 3 mm × 1 mm. Welding of the samples was carried out using the Lampert PuK 2 welding equipment, and a three-point bend test using a universal testing machine was carried out to evaluate the weld strength of the specimens. Statistical analysis was carried out using the SPSS software version 23. Higher weld strength was observed in the Co-Cr alloy (mean = 898 MPa) than in the Ni-Cr alloy (mean = 690 MPa), when submitted to TIG welding ( < 0.05). TIG welding could be a better alternative for joining base metal alloys for long span edentulous cases, and cobalt-based alloys could be better alternatives to nickel-based alloys that usually tend to cause hypersensitivity reactions.

To reduce the environmental impact of plastics, an increasing number of high-performance sustainable materials have emerged. Among them, wood-based high-performance structural materials have gained growing attention due to their outstanding mechanical and thermal properties. Here, we introduce phosphate groups onto the wood veneers for surface nanofibrillation, effectively altering both the molecular structure and surface morphology of wood, which enhances the interactions between wood veneers and endows the wood with excellent fire resistance properties.

The complementary properties of corrosion resistance and ballistic resistance of AA5083 and AA7075, respectively, explain the significance of welding these two alloys in the marine armor industry. This study investigates a novel Al-SiC matrix reinforcement with a different SiC weight ratio in dissimilar friction stir welding of the AA5083/AA7075 joint at different transverse and rotational speeds. The study deduced that the novel matrix can play an important role in improving strength and ductility simultaneously.

Hyaluronic acid-enhanced polyethylene polymeric TAVR shows excellent in vivo anti-calcific, anti-thrombotic, and in vitro hydrodynamic performance. However, during durability testing, impact wear and fatigue cause early valve failure. Heart valve durability can be improved by strengthening the leaflet with fiber reinforcement.

Creep Resistance and Microstructure Evolution in P23/P91 Welds.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Faculty of Materials Science and Technology, VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava, 17. listopadu 2172/15, 708 00 Ostrava, Czech Republic.

This paper summarizes the results of investigations into heterogeneous P23/P91 welds after long-term creep exposure at temperatures of 500, 550 and 600 °C. Two variants of welds were studied: In Weld A, the filler material corresponded to P91 steel, while in Weld B, the chemical composition of the consumable material matched P23 steel. The creep rupture strength values of Weld A exceeded those of Weld B at all testing temperatures.

Failure and Degradation Mechanisms of Steel Pipelines: Analysis and Development of Effective Preventive Strategies.

Materials (Basel)

Hydrotechnical Unit, KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., Polkowicka 52, 59-305 Rudna, Poland.

The increasing challenges related to the reliability and durability of steel pipeline infrastructure necessitate a detailed understanding of degradation and failure mechanisms. This study focuses on selective corrosion and erosion as critical factors, analyzing their impact on pipeline integrity using advanced methods, including macroscopic analysis, corrosion testing, microscopic examination, tensile strength testing, and finite element method (FEM) modeling. Selective corrosion in the heat-affected zones (HAZs) of longitudinal welds was identified as the dominant degradation mechanism, with pit depths reaching up to 6 mm, leading to tensile strength reductions of 30%.
