Objective: The aim of the present study was to reveal the effects of hypoxia-associated signaling in odontogenic cysts.

Design: The expression levels of genes involved in the hypoxia-associated signaling pathway were determined by quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method.

Results: As a result, it was found that phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) expression was low (p = 0.037), and the expression levels of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) (p = 0.0127), hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1A) (p < 0.001), and HIF1A antisense RNA 1 (HIF1A-AS1) (p = 0.0218) were higher in cyst tissue compared to normal tissue. HIF1A gene expression was found to be significantly altered according to the pathologic subtypes of odontogenic keratocyst, dentigerous cyst, and radicular cyst.

Conclusions: Odontogenic cysts were found to have higher expression of HIF1A and HIF1A-AS1, which may be related to the increased hypoxia in these lesions. In addition, PI3K/Akt signaling may be stimulated by increased PIK3CA and decreased PTEN expression, which promote cell survival and support the mechanism of cyst formation.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), known as the predominant type of aggressive B-cell lymphoma, is biologically and clinically heterogeneous. The prognosis of DLBCL is quite different among subtypes. Hypoxia is one of the key elements in tumor microenvironment, promoting tumor progression by means of various mechanisms, such as increased proliferation, altered metabolism, enhanced angiogenesis, and greater migratory capability, among others.

  • * Using advanced proteomic techniques, we compared brain tissue from high-altitude mice to control mice and identified 20 proteins linked to cognitive functions, with 18 showing significant changes.
  • * The results highlight several important signaling pathways affected by chronic hypoxia, which could offer new insights for preventing and treating cognitive impairment related to low oxygen environments.

Integrin α6β4 drives triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) aggressiveness through the transcriptional regulation of key genes. Here, we investigated how integrin α6β4 regulates protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type Z1 (PTPRZ1). Using stable re-expression of integrin β4 (ITGB4) in cells naturally devoid of integrin α6β4 or knockdown or knockout (KO) of ITGB4, we found that integrin α6β4 regulates PTPRZ1 expression.

Hypoxia is intricately associated with various diseases, including ischemia, vascular disorders, and cancer. Particularly in cancer cells, hypoxia promotes tumor growth, cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and enhances treatment resistance, making its detection crucial for cancer diagnosis and therapy. However, methods for detecting hypoxia are limited, often relying on single-detection systems.

Tibetan pigs are a unique swine strain adapted to the hypoxic environment of the plateau regions in China. The unique mechanisms underlying the adaption by Tibetan pigs, however, are still elusive. Only few studies have investigated hypoxia-associated molecular regulation in the lung tissues of animals living in the plateau region of China.
