In the marine environment, discarded cigarette filters (CFs) deteriorate and leach filter-associated chemicals. The study aim was to assess the effects of smoked CFs (SCFs) and non-smoked CFs (NCFs) particles on individual life-history traits in the deposit-feeding polychaete and extrapolate these to possible population-level effects. was exposed to sediment-spiked particles of NCFs and SCFs at an environmentally realistic concentration (0.1 mg particles g dw sed) and a 100-fold higher (10 mg particles g dw sed) concentration. Experimental setup incorporated 11 individual endpoints and lasted approximately 6 months. There were significant effects on all endpoints, except from adult body volume and egestion rate, in worms exposed to 10 mg SCF particles g dw sed. Although not statistically significant, there was ≥50% impact on time between reproductive events and number of eggs per female at 0.1 mg SCF particles g dw sed. None of the endpoints was significantly affected by NCFs. Results suggest that SCFs are likely to affect individual life-history traits of , whereas the population model suggests that these effects might not transform into population-level effects. The results further indicate that chemicals associated with CFs are the main driver causing the effects rather than the CF particles.

Influence of airborne particle abrasion on dentin bonding effectiveness of a 2-step universal adhesive.

J Dent

May 2024

Full Professor, KU Leuven (University of Leuven), Department of Oral Health Sciences, BIOMAT - Biomaterials Research Group & UZ Leuven (University Hospitals Leuven), Dentistry, Kapucijnenvoer 7, 3000 Leuven, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how airborne particle abrasion (APA) affects the bond strength of a dental adhesive (G2 Bond Universal) to dentin using various polishing powders.
  • Researchers compared bond strength results on dentin treated with different abrasives and found that certain powders, like sodium bicarbonate and bioactive glass, significantly improved bond strength, especially in etch-and-rinse mode.
  • Overall, air abrasion didn't harm bond strength, except when using a specific powder (AO29) in self-etch mode, indicating that using APA can be safe and effective for dental bonding.

Rapid industrialization, coupled with a historical lack of understanding in toxicology, has led in an increase in estuary pollution, frequently resulting in unexpected environmental situations. Therefore, the occurrence of heavy metals (HMs) constitutes a major environmental issue, posing a serious risk both to aquatic ecosystems and public health. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of eight HMs (As, Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in water, suspended particles, and sediment near the Sele River estuary (Italy) in order to assess their environmental impacts on the sea and health risks for humans.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study introduced magnetostrictive particles (MSPs) into MREFs, improving their sensitivity and mechanical properties compared to standard versions.
  • * A new formula was developed to describe the nonlinear relationship between magnetic fields and MREFs' performance, leading to a biosensor that detects low levels of human serum albumin with better sensitivity and faster response times than existing biosensors.

Selenium (Se) deficiency disrupts intracellular REDOX homeostasis and severely deteriorates immune and anti-inflammatory function in high-yielding periparturient dairy cattle. To investigate the damage of extracellular vesicles derived from Se-deficient MAC-T cells (SeD-EV) on normal mammary epithelial cells, an in vitro model of Se deficiency was established. Se-deficient MAC-T cells produced many ROS, promoting apoptosis and the release of inflammatory factors.

Structural and dynamical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane/fullerene nanocomposites: a molecular dynamics simulations study.

State Key Lab of Chemical Engineering, College of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou 310027, P. R. China.

In this work, the structural and dynamical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/fullerene (C) nanocomposites are investigated using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, focusing on the glass transition, thermal expansion, polymer mobility, polymer-C interactions, and diffusion behavior of C. The results show a slight increase in the glass transition temperature () with increasing C weight fraction (wt%), attributed to hindered polymer dynamics, and a remarkable reduction in the coefficient of thermal expansion above . Results of the mean squared displacement and the time decay of bond-reorientation autocorrelation indicate that the mobility of TPU hard segments is more restricted than that of soft segments, owing to the electrostatic attractions and the π-π stacking between isocyanate groups and C molecules.
