Jasmonate is a well-known defence hormone for plants, but it is also necessary for growth and development. Indeed, the identification of the COI1 receptor was based on the jasmonate-triggered response of root growth inhibition. In this special issue, a collection of review papers and two research papers discuss the current state of progress in this field, covering areas from seed germination and flowering to the Jasminum sambac genome.

Understanding the genetic basis of how plants defend against pathogens is important to monitor and maintain resilient tree populations. Swiss needle cast (SNC) and Rhabdocline needle cast (RNC) epidemics are responsible for major damage of forest ecosystems in North America. Here we investigate the genetic architecture of tolerance and resistance to needle cast diseases in Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) caused by two fungal pathogens: SNC caused by Nothophaeocryptopus gaeumannii, and RNC caused by Rhabdocline pseudotsugae.

Medicinal plants are rich sources for treating various diseases due their bioactive secondary metabolites. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) is one of the medicinal plants traditionally used in human nutrition and medicine which contains an active substance, called diosgenin, with anticancer properties. Biosynthesis of this important anticancer compound in fenugreek can be enhanced using eliciting agents which involves in manipulation of metabolite and biochemical pathways stimulating defense responses.

A weak codon usage bias was found in Dendrobium catenatum (D. officiale) antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), after the analysis of relative synonymous codon usage, GC contents, and the effective number of codons. The codon usage preference was mainly influenced by natural selection pressure.
