Sea buckthorn ( L.) is a small tree, valued for its medicinal properties throughout the ages. Sea buckthorn berries and leaves are a known source of phytochemicals and have been used in the treatment of inflammation, oedema, hypertension, ulcers, and wounds in folk medicine. Sea buckthorn seeds are natural dietary sources of various bioactive compounds as well, but the number of studies on their content and biological properties is still insufficient. For the first time, we examined the phytochemical content and biological activity of sea buckthorn seeds in vitro. We have studied the effect of two extracts-from regular (no thermal processing) and roasted (thermally processed) sea buckthorn seeds-on the levels of oxidative stress induced by HO/Fe in plasma, coagulation times, and white thrombus formation (measured by Total Thrombus-formation Analysis System-T-TAS). We observed that sea buckthorn seeds contain diverse flavonoids, mostly glycosides of isorhamnetin, kaempferol, and quercetin, as well as smaller amounts of proanthocyanidins and catechin, triterpenoid saponins, and a number of unidentified polar and hydrophobic compounds. Both extracts inhibited lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation, but only the extract from roasted seeds decreased oxidation of thiol groups in plasma treated with HO/Fe. They did not alter coagulation times, but the extract from roasted seeds at the highest concentration (50 µg/mL) prolonged the time needed for white thrombus formation. The results indicate that sea buckthorn seeds have antioxidant activity that is not impaired by thermal processing and possess anticoagulant potential, but more research is needed in order to ascertain which compounds are responsible for these effects, especially in in vivo models.

This study explores the therapeutic potential of ω-3 algal oil (rich in DHA) and ω-7 sea buckthorn oil (rich in palmitoleic acid) in addressing hyperlipidemia and associated metabolic disorders. These oils regulate lipid metabolism through the PPARγ-LXRα-ABCA1/ABCG1 signaling pathway, reducing cholesterol accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation. In high-fat diet-induced hyperlipidemic mice, supplementation with these oils significantly improved lipid profiles, alleviated hepatic steatosis, and promoted cardiovascular health.

Seabuckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) is an excellent plant that has the concomitant function of both medicine and foodstuff with high nutritional and health-promoting properties. As a pivotal bioactive component mainly existing in the seeds and leaves, seabuckthorn protein and its derived peptides have aroused wide attention owing to their multifaceted pharmacological activities, including anti-hypertensive, hypoglycemic, anti-obesity, anti-freeze, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, sobriety, anti-oxidant and anti-neurodegenerative functions. Despite these promising attributes, the application of seabuckthorn peptides as functional food and medicines are impeded due to lack of a comprehensive understanding of pharmacological activities and intricate structure-activity relationship.

The elemental dynamics and interactions within deadwood profoundly influence carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. Recent studies have investigated macronutrient cycling during deadwood decay of specific plants, yet the dynamics and interactions of micronutrients, trace elements, and the elementome across species and decay stages remain unexplored. Here, we investigated the elementome and their coupling relationships across five decay stages of downed deadwood (DDW) from four dominant species (Hippophae rhamnoides, Populus purdomii, Abies fabri, and Picea brachytyla) along the Hailuogou Glacier primary successional chronosequence.

Sea buckthorn, rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds such as phenolics, fatty acids, and vitamins, presents processing challenges due to its intense sourness and bland flavor. This study addresses key challenges in flavor enhancement and sourness reduction by evaluating the effects of pectinase treatment and inoculation sequences on the overall quality. Optimal malic acid degradation and antioxidant occurred when Schizosaccharomyces pombe (S.
