Direction-selective single units within the medial terminal nucleus of the rat were shown to prefer motion in upward-temporal or downward-nasal directions. Lesions of the optic tract nucleus practically abolished responses to the nasal direction of motion and increased the directional bias toward the temporal direction. Such results suggest a significant role of that pretectal nucleus in the determination of direction selectivity of accessory optic neurons.

Animals construct diverse behavioral repertoires by moving a limited number of body parts with varied kinematics and patterns of coordination. There is evidence that distinct movements can be generated by changes in activity dynamics within a common pool of motoneurons or by selectively engaging specific subsets of motoneurons in a task-dependent manner. However, in most cases, we have an incomplete understanding of the patterns of motoneuron activity that generate distinct actions and of how upstream premotor circuits select and assemble such motor programs.

Restricted repetitive behaviors (RRB) encompass a variety of inflexible behaviors, which are diagnostic for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Despite being requisite diagnostic criteria, the neurocircuitry of these behaviors remains poorly understood, limiting treatment development. Studies in translational animal models show environmental enrichment (EE) reduces the expression of RRB, although the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown.

Significance: Many techniques exist for screening retinal phenotypes in mouse models in vision research, but significant challenges remain for efficiently probing higher visual centers of the brain. Photoacoustic computed tomography (PACT), with optical sensitivity to hemodynamic response (HR) in brain and ultrasound resolution, provides unique advantages in comprehensively assessing higher visual function in the mouse brain.
