In this study, we investigated the lexical ability in L1 and L2 of 60 immigrant children who were 37 to 62 months old and exposed to minority languages (L1) and Italian (L2). Using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories, we measured children's vocabulary production in L1 and L2. From interviews, we collected data on quantitative language exposure (parental input, child output, length of exposure to L2 at preschool, and parental oral fluency) and qualitative home-language exposure (HLE) practices (active, play, and passive) in L1 and L2. We conducted stepwise regression analyses to explore which factors predicted children's vocabulary production in L1 and L2. The child's chronological age and parental education were not predictors of vocabulary production. L2 parental input, L1 child output, and L1 HLE-active practices explained 42% of the variance in children's L1 vocabulary production. L2 child output and L2 HLE-active practices explained 47% of the variance in children's L2 vocabulary production, whereas length of L2 exposure in preschool was a predictor only when we included quantitative language-exposure factors in the model. The effects of the quantity and quality of language exposure on lexical ability among preschool immigrant children are discussed.

Legal pluralism and the production of (un)certainty in lived migration orders.

Leg Plur Crit Soc Anal

July 2024

Laboratoire d'Anthropologie Sociale et Culturelle, University of Liège, Liège, Belgium.

This article builds on three of Keebet von Benda-Beckmann's core concepts, namely, legal pluralism, social security and relational social theory, to reflect on the place of law in lived migration orders, both in the global north and in the global south. To do this, we build on three empirical case studies from our respective fieldsites in Germany, Belgium and the DRC. These cases illustrate how 'thinking with Keebet's work' not only offers useful 'sensitizing concepts' for the empirical study of migration law and migration studies more broadly, but also provides a much-needed conceptual vocabulary to speak to and intervene in current debates in more doctrinal legal scholarship on global migration law.

The impact of cochlear implants on speech and language outcomes in pre-lingually deafened Arabic-speaking children: a systematic review.

Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol

December 2024

Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, College of Applied Medical Sciences, King Saud University, 12371, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Purpose: Cochlear implants have been proven to improve speech and language in children with severe-to-profound hearing loss. This review examines speech and language outcomes in prelingual Arabic-speaking children using cochlear implants.

Methods: A systematic search for articles was performed in PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) using search strings developed from topic keywords.

This study suggests a way to utilize the existing medical ontology and natural language processing techniques to extract major medical concepts from lay vocabularies of health consumers on social media and group them based on the defined semantic types in the ontology. Diabetes-related discussions on Tumblr was used to test the efficiency of SpaCy and the Markov-Viterbi algorithm to map lay medical terms to the defined medical concepts in the UMLS. The system discussed in this paper can better analyze free texts, take care of word ambiguity and extract the lifestyle indicators from the daily life discussions of diabetic people on Tumblr.

Assessing early vocabulary development commonly involves parent report methods and behavioral tasks like looking-while-listening. While both yield reliable aggregate scores, findings are mixed regarding their reliability in measuring infants' knowledge of individual words. Using archival data from 126 monolingual and bilingual 14-31-month-olds, we further examined links across these methods at the word level, while controlling for potentially confounding child-level factors.
