Tagane & S. Fujii, from the Kimotsuki Mountains in the Ohsumi Peninsula, southern Japan, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to in having three-petaloid calyx lobes in marginal flowers, but is distinguished by the larger stamen number, and longer styles and seeds. Multiplex ISSR genotyping by sequencing (MIG-seq) demonstrated that the new species is monophyletic and closely related to and rather than .

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition caused by abnormal contact between the femur head and the acetabulum, which damages the labrum and articular cartilage. While the prevalence and the type of impingement may vary across human groups, the variability among populations with short height or with a high prevalence of overweight has not yet been explored. Latin American studies have rarely been conducted in reference to this condition, including the Mayan and mestizo populations from the Yucatan Peninsula.

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a key part of the food web in the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Significant inter-annual fluctuations in population dynamics make stock assessment and management of its population a significant challenge. To better understand the population dynamics and fluctuation of krill, a survey-based age-structured catch-at-length model (ACL) is used to estimate the periodic fluctuations, based on length data collected from scientific surveys under the US Antarctic Marine Living Resources (AMLR) Program between 1992 and 2011.

During the study of algal diversity in pyroclastic deposits of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Chlorella-like green algae strains VCA-72 and VCA-93 were isolated from samples collected from along the Baydarnaya river bed on the Shiveluch volcano in 2018 and at the outlet of thermal vapors along the edge of the caldera on the southern slope of the Gorely volcano in 2020. Identification of the strains was carried out within the framework of an integrative approach using microscopic and molecular genetic methods, including preliminary taxon identification, obtaining nucleotide sequences of the small subunit and the internal transcribed spacer rRNA, reconstruction of phylogenetic trees and secondary structures of the ITS1 and ITS2 rRNA regions. On the phylogenetic tree, strain VCA-93 was clustered in the Micractinium thermotolerans species clade.

Persistent organic pollutants and fatty acids in humpback whales: Antarctic and Chilean feeding and Brazilian breeding sites.

This study investigated the fatty acid composition and persistent organic pollutant (POP) levels in humpback whales across the Southern Ocean, Chilean and Brazilian coast. We found significant regional variations in both fatty acids and POPs. Whales from the Strait of Magellan exhibited a distinct fatty acid profile, indicative of a specialized diet rich in higher trophic level prey.

Water masses drive the spatial and temporal distribution of marine Archaea in the northern Antarctic Peninsula.

The Southern Ocean influences the planet's biogeochemical cycles. Marine microorganisms are important in this scenario, being the main biological agents in the cycling of many elements. The Archaea domain is widely distributed in the oceans, and its presence in Antarctica is acknowledged.
