Thirteen new species of Thomson (Staphylinidae: Scydmaeninae: Glandulariini) are described from the southern Appalachian Mts, USA: , , , , , , , , , , , , and These share a number of morphological characters with the Old World subgenus Cladoconnus Reitter, representing a diversification of species distinct from anything previously known from the western hemisphere. Most of the species occur at higher elevations, some at the tops of the region's highest mountains, and a few are single-peak endemics. No females of these species are winged, and in several species neither sex is winged. A preliminary phylogeny suggests the wingless species represent a clade within a clade of wing-dimorphic species.

Coral reefs are hotspots of marine biodiversity, which results in the synthesis of a wide variety of compounds with unique molecular scaffolds, and bioactivities, rendering reefs an ecosystem of interest. The chemodiversity stems from the intricate relationships between inhabitants of the reef, as the chemistry produced partakes in intra- and interspecies communication, settlement, nutrient acquisition, and defense. However, the coral reefs are declining at an unprecedented rate due to climate change, pollution, and increased incidence of pathogenic diseases.

The ZSM-5 zeolite is the key active component in high-severity fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts and is routinely activated by phosphorus compounds in industrial production. To date, however, the detailed structure and function of the introduced phosphorus still remain ambiguous, which hampers the rational design of highly efficient catalysts. In this work, using advanced solid-state NMR techniques, we have quantitatively identified a total of seven types of P-containing complexes in P-modified ZSM-5 zeolite and clearly revealed their structure, location, and catalytic role.

Self-diffusion coefficients, *, are routinely estimated from molecular dynamics simulations by fitting a linear model to the observed mean squared displacements (MSDs) of mobile species. MSDs derived from simulations exhibit statistical noise that causes uncertainty in the resulting estimate of *. An optimal scheme for estimating * minimizes this uncertainty, i.

Variation of physical wood properties and effect of dasometric variables in trees growing in plantation.

Heliyon

January 2025

Escuela de Ingeniería Forestal, Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Apartado, 159-7050, Cartago, Costa Rica.

Physical properties were studied in commercial plantation of balsa established in Costa Rica. Among other variables studied, physical properties varied mainly for tree age, spacing, stand density, diameter, and height of trees, which we named dasometric conditions. The aim of this study was (i) to determine the variation of specific gravity (SG), air-dry density (AD), green density (GD), and green moisture content (GMC), (ii) to know the site effect and dasometric conditions on these properties, and (iii) to establish the relationship between the four physical properties.
