Background: Diabetic nephropathy is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Fatty acid binding proteins (FABP1 and FABP2) play a role in the development and progression of chronic kidney disease including type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Aim: We assessed serum FABP1 and FABP2 levels in children and adolescents with T1DM as potential markers for diabetic nephropathy and their relation to carotid intima media thickness (CIMT).

Methods: Sixty patients with T1DM were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of nephropathy and compared with 30 healthy controls. CIMT, fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), urinary albumin creatinine ratio (UACR), fasting lipid profile and serum FABP1 and FABP2 levels were assessed.

Results: FABP1 and FABP2 levels were significantly higher among type 1 diabetic patient with and without nephropathy compared with healthy controls with the highest levels among patients with nephropathy (p < 0.001). There were significant positive correlations between FABP1 and FABP2 and each of systolic blood pressure, CIMT, FBG, HbA1c and total cholesterol among T1DM patients. FABP1 was negatively correlated to glomerular filtration rate. Multivariable linear regression analysis showed that systolic blood pressure, CIMT, FBG and HbA1c were the significant independent variables related to FABP1 levels in type 1 diabetic patients with nephropathy. ROC curve analysis was performed to determine the cutoff value of FABP1 and FABP2 that could detect nephropathy.

Conclusion: FABP1 and FABP2 levels are elevated in children and adolescents with T1DM and could represent a link between diabetic nephropathy and subclinical atherosclerosis.

Antioxidants (Basel)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Tropical and Subtropical Fishery Resources Application and Cultivation, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Pearl River Fisheries Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, Guangzhou 510380, China.

To investigate the effect of tannic acid (TA) on the growth, disease resistance, and intestinal health of Chinese soft-shelled turtles, individual turtles were fed with 0 g/kg (CG), 0.5 g/kg, 1 g/kg, 2 g/kg, and 4 g/kg TA diets for 98 days. Afterwards, the turtles' disease resistance was tested using .

Background: Radiation-mediated GI injury (RIGI) is observed in humans either due to accidental or intentional exposures. This can only be managed with supporting care and no approved countermeasures are available till now. Early detection and monitoring of RIGI is important for effective medical management and improve survival chances of exposed individuals.

ZLY06 is a dual agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) δ/γ, showing potential therapeutic effects on metabolic syndrome. However, our research has revealed that ZLY06 exhibits hepatotoxicity in normal C57BL/6J mice, though the precise mechanism remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the manifestations and mechanisms of ZLY06-induced hepatotoxicity.

Intestinal Fatty Acid-Binding Protein as a Potential Biomarker for Gastrointestinal Complications after Complex Endovascular Aortic Surgery.

Ann Vasc Surg

September 2024

Faculty of Medicine and Health, Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Örebro University, Örebro University Hospital, Örebro, Sweden; School of Medical Sciences, Örebro University, Örebro, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored the link between intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) levels and acute gastrointestinal injury (AGI) grades in patients undergoing endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.
  • Higher I-FABP concentrations at 24 and 48 hours post-surgery correlated with increased AGI grades on the first three postoperative days, as well as a higher incidence of gastrointestinal complications.
  • These findings suggest that monitoring I-FABP levels and AGI grades could help improve the management of GI complications in patients after this type of surgery.
