Conjunctival malignant melanoma is extremely rare, with no standard of care established at moment. Here we report a 65-year-old woman, as a hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier, who presented concurrently a liver mass and lower bulbar conjunctival pigmented lesions in the right eye. Needle liver biopsy and excisional conjunctival biopsy showed hepatocellular carcinoma and conjunctival malignant melanoma , respectively.

Structural Color Contact Lenses from Cholesteric Cellulose Liquid Crystals.

Small Methods

December 2024

Institute of Translational Medicine, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 210096, China.

Colored contact lenses have gained popularity among young individuals owing to their ability to alter the appearance of the wearer's eyes. However, conventional lenses containing chemical dyes are susceptible to detachment of the pigment layer, which can lead to corneal damage. In this research, a novel cellulose-based structural color contact lens (SCCL) is presented that enhances aesthetic appeal via a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) layer.

Diffuse iris melanoma leading to secondary glaucoma in a lion (Panthera leo)-A case report.

Departamento de Medicina Veterinária, Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Curitiba, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 12-year-old male African lion was diagnosed with eye issues, including discharge and swelling, leading to the discovery of an intraocular mass via ocular ultrasonography.
  • - The lion underwent enucleation (removal of the eye), and histopathological analysis confirmed the presence of diffuse iris melanoma, a type of cancer affecting the iris and ciliary body.
  • - While diffuse iris melanoma is common in domestic cats, it's rarely seen in larger felids like lions, and more research is needed to understand its impact and prognosis in these animals.

Our study aimed to compare the anatomical features of the eyeball, lens, and retina between the two raptor birds of different visual active clock hours: the diurnal common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus rupicilaeformis) and the nocturnal little owl (Athene noctua glaux) using gross, morphometric analysis, histological, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The semi-spherical eyeball of the kestrel had less convexity on the anterior surface than on the posterior surface; meanwhile, it was relatively larger in the owl. There is a relationship between the corneal diameter (CD) and the eye axial length (AL).

Primates, the most colorful mammalian radiation, have previously served as an interesting model to test the functions and evolutionary drivers of variation in eye color. We assess the contribution of photo-regulatory and communicative functions to the external eye appearance of nine macaque species representing all the branches of their radiation. Macaques' well described social structure and wide geographical distribution make them interesting to explore.
